Need some lottery luck before Thursday's draw? Check out some tips from Australia's biggest Powerball winner!

We don't know about you, members, but we here at the SDC love taking our chances at the occasional Powerball – it's just so much fun! And, of course, we always dream of what we would do if our numbers finally came up and we won the jackpot.

Well, it looks like someone out there is going to get very lucky soon because the Powerball jackpot has just hit a record high of $160 million for draw 1380 on Thursday night! That means it's potentially Australia's largest lottery win ever.

With no Powerball division one winners last week, the $100 million jackpot prize skyrocketed to an unprecedented sum. Up to half of all Australian adults are now expected to have an entry in Thursday's draw in the hope of making history.

So get your tickets ready; this could be your big chance!

'As this is the largest Australian jackpot ever offered, we're expecting it to be busy in-store and online in the lead-up to this monumental draw,' said James Eddy, a spokesperson for The Lott.

To be in with a chance of winning that life-changing amount of money, players will need to purchase an entry by 7:30 pm AEST on Thursday night.

But what happens when you actually win? Do you quit your job immediately? Do you tell everyone you know or just a select few? What changes and what stays the same?

Luckily for us curious folks, a Sydney mother who was working as a nurse and holds the current record for winning Australia's richest lottery prize (a whopping $107 million back in 2019!) has opened up about life after that breathtaking moment – and she has some interesting insights that might surprise you…

Here are the three things you need to do if you win the lottery, according to Australia's biggest winner:

If possible, go about your day as usual

Even though it might be tempting to quit your job and start living the high life as soon as you get your hands on the money, the Sydney lottery winner advises against it.

Her advice for anyone who finds themselves unexpectedly wealthy overnight is not to quit their job immediately (like most people would probably do). In fact, she suggests quite the opposite: 'If it's possible and you can stand it', she says, 'wake up the next morning and go to work'.

Why? Because going about your daily life for the first few weeks will give you some much-needed normality during such a surreal time - plus, it allows the news to slowly sink in and not overwhelm you.

Get good financial advice

This is arguably the most important piece of advice because let's face it – most of us probably don't know the first thing about financial planning, and a sudden influx of cash is not going to change that.

'Run, don't walk, to a really good financial advisor,' the winner said. 'It takes two weeks for the prize money to come through. I used those two weeks to engage a financial advisor who I really trusted.'

Be mindful of your friends and family's reactions

Winning the lottery is a big deal, and, naturally, your friends and family will have a lot of questions and maybe even some mixed emotions about it. But it's important to be mindful of how your news might affect them.

'Take some time to think about who you might tell before you start sharing the news with your family and friends, and let the story get out of the headlines first,' the winner advised.

'If this news affects relationships in a negative way, then it's probably time for that relationship to end anyway, and that's just natural.' Fortunately for the mother, her announcement was met with tears of genuine joy from all those she told.

Key Takeaways

  • A Sydney nurse who won the biggest lottery jackpot in Australian history in 2019 has some advice for this week's record-high $160 million Powerball draw hopefuls.
  • If you win the Powerball jackpot, it is important to keep things relaxed and normal, get good financial advice as soon as possible, and think about who you tell about your winnings, as not everyone will react positively.
  • She also urges future lottery winners to keep working if they enjoy their job, as she did after becoming a multi-millionaire.
We hope you found these tips helpful, members, and we wish you the best of luck if you do decide to buy a ticket! Remember, though, that the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 134 million, so don't go spending your life savings on tickets!

What are your thoughts on this story? Do you agree with the nurse's advice, or is there something else that you would do if you ever won the Powerball? Let us know in the comments!

Not that I do lotto but if I did I don't think I'd do the big ones. Just about every man and his dog will have at least one ticket in a big week meaning that your chances of winning is less than a squillion to one. For a lesser possible win your chances would improve to only millions to one!:)

Good advice from someone who knows. So many winners throw their old lives away and are broke within 5 years.

Be nice to win this & advice that makes sense.

The draw has been done now, 3 winners, 3 states & $53 million plus each. Some of these maybe syndicates but not as much as our lady in the story.

Hey, I'm new to this forum, but I couldn't resist chiming in on this post. The excitement around this $160 million jackpot is contagious. I mean, who wouldn't want a chance at winning that kind of money? I checked out the tips from Australia's biggest Powerball winner, and they seem pretty solid to me. But, if you're feeling lucky and want to try your hand at some other games, there's a reliable casino available online called https://369joker.org. They've got a bunch of different games to choose from, and who knows, maybe you'll have some luck there too! Of course, we all know the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are pretty slim, but hey, it's still fun to dream, right? And who knows, maybe someone out there will be the lucky winner of this record-breaking jackpot.
