A Virgin Australia spokesperson addressed the incident, reporting the VA696 flight's return due to a ‘disruptive passenger’ on board.
‘On arrival in Perth, the aircraft was met by the Australian Federal Police and the disruptive guest was offloaded,’ they stated.
‘The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority and we sincerely apologise to guests impacted.’
For the majority of passengers, the disruption meant being re-booked onto other flights to Melbourne.
The man at the centre of this mid-air drama remains in hospital and is expected to be summoned to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on June 14.
According to the police, the charges ‘he will face are yet to be finalised’.
