Mysterious smell on Qantas flight lands cabin crew member in hospital

Air travel is a means of transport that many have grown to know and love over the years.

It's how some of us get around the country—we have a continent to ourselves, after all—and even the world in comfort and relative convenience.

However, even though air travel is relatively safe and many precautions are taken to ensure passengers’ safety, sometimes 'unforeseen' aircraft situations come up.

Case in point: a recent incident on board a Qantas flight.

As flight QF1527, a Boeing 717, flew from Canberra to Melbourne, the pilots detected an 'unusual smell in the flight deck' right before landing.

As soon as the plane touched down in Melbourne, paramedics were called to assess the situation.

The pilots were reportedly unscathed, but, unfortunately, one of the Qantas cabin crew members was affected by the mysterious smell.

'The pilots did not require any treatment, however, one cabin crew member was taken to hospital for further medical checks,' the airline said.

'No passengers were impacted by the smell.'

The aircraft is also currently being assessed by Qantas' engineers.

Officials have yet to specify a culprit for the smell.

It’s worth noting though that in previous incidents of a similar nature, tricresyl phosphate, more commonly known as TCP, have been discovered to contaminate the air within aircrafts with leaky seals or a poor maintenance record. Symptoms range from having a strange taste in the mouth to nausea. It can also lead to symptoms that can incapacitate pilots.

In similar ‘smelly’ news, on board an easyJet flight from Tenerife, Spain, to London, the return of some holiday-goers did not go as planned and was surely not the smooth journey they expected it would be.

The easyJet plane descended into chaos when a passenger allegedly ‘defecated’ on the floor, leading to the cancellation of the flight and leaving others stranded.

On-board footage from the British budget airline reveals toilet paper scattered across the plane's aisle.

The captain announced that the flight had to be rescheduled for the following morning, which enraged passengers who had to endure significant delays on a Sunday evening.

Their frustration escalated when easyJet announced their inability to secure accommodations in the area, leaving many in a frantic search for their lodgings for the night.

Passengers were initially offered to transfer to a smaller aircraft with a £500 (AU$950) voucher.

However, no one took the offer, which caused passengers to endure the additional delay as their luggages was redirected onto alternative flights bound for London.

The revised plan was for passengers to finally depart and head home at 3 p.m. on Monday.

An easyJet spokesperson confirmed that flight EZY8054 from Tenerife to London’s Gatwick Airport faced an overnight delay as the aircraft needed additional cleaning.

‘We did all possible to minimise the impact of the disruption for our customers…'

‘The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority, and while this was outside of our control, we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.’

Sounds like maybe QANTAS might be lacking in it's maintenance of the Aircraft....maybe the money that was earmarked for its maintenance crews was given to someone we know to pay for his departing Superannuation pay out or his BONUS's. 🤔😉 Anyway let's hope that they find the problem and fix it.
