Mum shares her bathroom renovation gone WRONG: 'I would not be paying for that'

If you ever feel embarrassed about your lousy home renovation skills, just keep in mind that you're not the only one; don't worry, most of us at the SDC HQ are also complete amateurs at it. (April and Maddie are actually quite good so ask them haha!)

If you give us some wood planks, a hammer, and some nails, the opposite of what we planned to do can even happen—we might make things worse! Unfortunately, this is the case for a lot of would-be home-renovators.

The process of house renovation can be both thrilling and daunting, but luckily there are skilled people out there, like architects, designers, constructors, cabinetmakers, etc., who are always willing to lend a helping hand (for a fee).

But, unfortunately, as with most fields and industries, some skilled workers are 'less skilled' than others. And no matter how optimistic you were at the beginning of the project, sadly, the reality of a remodel isn't often as rosy as the dream you had in mind.

That is what happened to this one mum who shared her story on Facebook, revealing that the builders she hired to renovate her bathroom totally messed up their work.

Aussie homeowner Emma said she was totally frustrated after discovering that the constructors placed her bathroom cabinet in a 'completely non-functional space' twice and to make matters worse, they even damaged it on the third try.

'Our renovation has been one stuff up after another,' she wrote in her post on social media.

She also included photographs of the 'poor quality' work, clearly showing the off-centre, low cabinet that, when opened, collided with the towel rail and came dangerously close to making contact with the running water.

'It's been eight months of complaining from our end of continuous sh*t work. The builder still argues that the shaving cabinet is high enough, but it needs to go more than one inch higher, in my opinion,' Emma continued. 'My grandchildren will be able to reach the cabinet. Plus, it looks silly with low ceilings!'

Another reason for her headache is the cracked cabinet, which has been fixed so many times that it is now only held together with silicone. Emma claims to have already spent close to $150,000 on the remodelling of her home, so the sight of this shoddy work is incredibly frustrating for her.

In the Facebook group, Emma had hundreds of people rally to her side, with many people agreeing with her assessment of the subpar work being done by her contractors.

'I would not be paying for that – it's such a shame that you've spent all that money and are still unhappy,' said one man in the comments section. Meanwhile, another asked: 'Why is the heated towel rail cord sticking out? Normally, an electrician would've wired the cord into the wall and added a switch onto the power point or light switch.'

She pleaded with the members to assist her in trying to correct the mistake that the contractor had made and asked where they felt the cabinet should be placed. Several people proposed installing the cabinet into the wall or removing it entirely and replacing it with a mirror.

'I think the cabinet takes focus away from the sink and tap - I would use a large round mirror to soften the edges everywhere else,' suggested one woman, followed by a few more suggestions.

Others, meanwhile, gave her some tips for the next time she wanted to fix up her house. 'I always draw a plan of install heights prior to my builds. The tradies don't choose where I want things put,' one user said.

Oh no, this is disappointing and for so much money… Let's cross our fingers and hope she receives her money back or the job is at least fixed to her standard…

Do people not talk to their contractors? I have always spent the time to offer tea or coffee, maybe even a cheeky biscuit! Chat to them to let them know you recognise them as humans, ask their opinions or recommendations and let them know what you hope to achieve. I have then found that the guys are more amenable and will often go out of their way to do a superior job.:)

The shaving cabinet height would be acceptable IF the basin was set into the benchtop. As this is an above counter basin/tap design a height adjustment should have been made but clearly wasn't. And just a comment on the towel rail wiring, it can be difficult to hard wire these neatly once a wall is finished. I'm not sure if the wall is face brick or tiles (the close up indicates a gloss surface so possibly tiles) but if the power point is on the other side of a stud then getting the cable thru can be challenging, and time consuming. I have recently installed a similar unit on a tiled wall (new home) and have no issue with the exposed cable. I actually prefer this as much simpler to remove should the unit fail (and yes I know the newer models now have miniplugs in the mounting foot) and it's not always about appearance. And finally the contractor needs to respect the clients wishes and unless there are valid reasons why a clients requests cannot/should not be followed then if that's what they want then that's what they should get. The over-riding rule is that an agreement must be reached between all parties.

I've seen much worse if your doing your own work the internet is a great place to find out how to do something my hobby is carpentry if I think of some thing to build I don't start until I've looked at how people do it on youtube great place for ideas

The cabinet definitely does not go with the basil.

The mirror should be smaller and higher , it's too close to the basin and taps.

I've been having problems with my upstairs bathroom with leaking pipes I'm hopefully having it fixed now , I've had water going through the downstairs bedroom ceiling

I took old stained pine doors off bathroom cupboards as they always reminded me of a Fish’nChip shop Circa 1960s.
Sanded, primed 2 coats, sanded, painted 2 coats in white, sanded, primed twice again. Let sit for six weeks to set paint.
But after 12 months, 2 doors are not re-attached. It took seven months for me to put back 2 doors as screws are small & inside the cupboard. 2 hinges/door = 6 screws
Bcz I cannot bend long enough to them back in!
My spine is AGONY every day via degenerative disc disease+arthritis, + arthritis both thumbs & recovering from CarbonMonoxide poisoning frm the flat below.
A tradie came to do the govt free LED light globe exchange but would not help - not his job! It’s 9 blasted 3/4 inch screws!
Wondering if cld glue the hinges in place?
I HATE GETTING OLD and unable to sit on the floor w tools, shrunk so can’t reach lights, owning 4 ladders but getting to wobbly to use them, and no help anywhere for simple things - like screwing a hinge back in place! Never try renovating over 65yo.

Where are you located Babsl? Have you tried your local Community Centre? I know at ours we have what is known as Community Helpers, they go around to do gardening or little odd jobs that the home occupiers can't manage on their own. I think it just costs you a cup of tea or coffee and maybe a biscuit!! Maybe worth looking into.:)
