Mum shares dismal clothing store shopping experience

Shopping for clothes can often be a tricky and daunting experience.

But the experience can be even worse for those who have to deal with unsolicited and unkind comments from staff members in stores.

One mum felt unheard and judged wrongfully in one popular retail store—all because of a pair of denim jeans.

Yassie Marie was out shopping one day when she thought of trying on some high-waisted pants at a Kookai store. She posted her experience on social media.

‘I went and pulled an item–some high-waisted pants–off the rack,’ she began.

‘I went to try them on, and the chick that was standing out front of the changing rooms completely ignored me.’

She tried to call the staff’s attention, but she was still ignored. She then decided to try the pants in one of the changing rooms.

‘They didn’t fit, and I came out of the change rooms, and there were two girls standing at the counter,’ she explained. She added that one staff member walked out of the counter, while another walked past her.

Yassie continued, ‘I said, “Hi, sorry, do you have this in a bigger size?”

She took it off me and checked the tag, and said she didn’t.’

After, Yassie asked if other stores had her size, and the staff’s reply was ‘No, we don’t stock plus size items.’

This answer shocked Yassie, especially considering the size she was looking for and the average size for women is between 14-16 in Australia.

Yassie didn’t consider herself a plus size, but she walked out of the store as fast as she could. She was ready to go home, but she went into General Store with a size 10 pair of denim pants.

The video’s caption said, perhaps tinged with sarcasm: ‘Thank for that Kookai, I needed to be humbled.’

Yassie Marie mentioned that she had been struggling with her body ever since she gave birth, and it was at that moment that she felt good to try on clothes. She added that the experience made her want to cry.

A spokesperson from Kookai said it reached out to Yassie to ask for more context. Kookai’s range is currently stocking sizes 10 to 14.

The video had almost a million views, with several people sharing their experiences with the brand, and more than a handful told similar stories.

‘I had the exact same experience at Kookai! The girl literally said to me, “We don’t have your size here, you can try City Chic.” I was a size 8,’ one user commented.

Another one said, ‘You should try walking into Kookai and actually being plus size.’

‘I actually worked at Kookai over 10 years ago during uni and literally still talk about that whole experience in therapy,’ a third said.

Another user also commented, ‘Same happened to me! Fully ignored because I’m a size 12 Lebanese woman and don’t fit their “ideal”, I left my $450 purchase at the till.’

“OMG yes, the Kookai workers don’t even acknowledge you unless you’re a [social media] model,’ said another.

Another user said, ‘Once I met this girl in a club bathroom, she told me she works at Kookai and I literally screamed out loud. No, thank you, ma'am! Ran for my life!!’

This is all about hiring the wrong staff, and, not training them properly. It goes from the showroom floor all the way up to the boardroom.
Never treat prospective customers like you are doing them a favour by being there.
There is no excuse for rude behaviour.
Remember the movie Pretty Woman. Pretty much says it all.

I have struggled with my weight all my life going up and down. Used to fit into size 32 short. Now looking at 42 to 44. I have quite a bad back which doesn't help and also severe depression being unable to work since going on a DSP from Centrelink. Estimate I have lost nearly 2 million dollars in lost wages and Super. Have no savings and my relationship with my spouse is turbulent and unlikely to improve. I've developed type 2 diabetes and also have prostate issues, legs are very swollen on tablets for that.
I also have a stomach and colon issues that I will get looked at as well as an abdominal midline hernia because my abductus muscle has separated to in my estimates about 10 centremetetd. Also have hearing issues as well and turn 70 in mid December.

GP told me upper GI surgeon won't operate as it is not causing any serious concerns.

I too have had experiences like this lady and others being told we don't stock any men's sizes larger than 32 and everything pants wise were skinny sizes. I can't remember the store but it didn't last long before shutting down.

I feel sad that society thinks everyone is a size 0 and us vertical and horizontal challenged people do exist in this world.

You used to get pants in Short, Regular and Long but those days are LONG gone sadly.

I shop at Lowe's as you can get allsizes there except everything is Long, needs to be reheated. Good luck with that.

Sorry to hear how you all are being treated. Stay strong and demand they bring back normal sizes again.

Worst customer service I have ever received. Looking at items and then being asked if i can afford them! Disgusted with the poor treatment! I will never shop at gasp again, feels more like a room full of bitchy stalking pests then customer service! I would give 0 stars if i could. FYI yes i can afford but will not tolerate poor treatment.

Horrible experience, I would not even give a one star, only because it will not allow me to post if i dont rate it.
there is no change room, and no sign that said you are not allowed to try on dresses. Sales lady was so so pushy, material of the clothing is low class, not worth the value. I would suggest everyone to look at the review before you spend a single penny there. Also they are not generous with Cancellation at all unless you take the matter further.

Customer service is an absolute nightmare. Never stepping into a Gasp store again. Staff in store were up-themselves, unhelpful and rude, and staff in head office were even worse.

Sad that customer service has gone out the window with many stores and obviously staff are not properly trained. We all deserve to be politely treated no matter how big or small we are and how big or small our purchase may be.

Dont despair. I'm a 10 or 12 in most places, even 8 on occasion, yet I've never been able by anything in Kookai that fits me properly. All their clothes are undersized. No idea why their sizing is so rubbish. Stopped going in there a long time ago.

And this is why I do most of my shopping on line Lol
Me also. I shop thru LightintheBox.
Great range of products, good quality, excellent prices, especially their flash sales and great service.
A.hint for anyone contemplating using their site
Download their app, you get much better prices if you shop thru the app and you get very generous offers.
Only one problem, you also get a lot of emails. I look at them all because I'm a terrible shopaholic, but if you aren't looking for anything then just trash them

I did try lightin the box after a recommendation here but tbh I prefer TEMU. Their products i found more true to size and slightly better quality. Also with free delivery which they offer on everything no matter how much or little you spend I found it much cheaper

They are mostly the same products, same quality. They are sold by numerous websites, but come from the same factory.
I pay very minimal delivery, special offer, and only shop thru the app where I found the prices better than Temu
If you don't shop thru the app you will sometimes pay considerably more.

I have come up with a theory.
Kookai has a French origin. Hence, the anorexic expectation. They must be basing their patterns on nose up haute couture and expecting the rest of the world to comply.
I have never been anywhere near their outlets, and, am sized out to even walk in the door. The size Ninjas would probably lunge down at me from the ceiling the second my foot touches the threshold.
Even if I was a tiny person, I would not give Kookai a moment of my interest, and, will pass on the poor experiences of others to anyone who will listen.
Customers are the ones with power....just walk.

I do shop through the app but still found it cheaper with the free shipping with TEMU. Plus they send me discount offers all the time. SHEIN is another similar to TEMU but again if you add on the shipping it makes it expensive

Yes, I have bought a couple of things thru SheIn, did find them a bit more expensive.
I did buy some acrylic nails thru Temu for a really good price,.but I had to make the order up to $25 to get free shipping, not really a problem, I just doubled my order. Might look at them again and check out the clothes
Compare them to Lightinthebox. I pay $12.95 freight with them, so usually only works out to a dollar or two, sometimes less, depends how much I buy.
I live in a small country town and run a shopping group so sometimes can buy 20 or so items so the freight is negligible.
Nevertheless I will take your advice and check out Temu clothes also.

I am a larger size now due to thyroidal probs but I want to lose weight for health reasons & for my own satisfaction, plus I have some lovely clothes I can’t fit into at the mo!
I will lose for healths sake firstly!
For everyone out there, whatever size you are, please do yourself a favour & listen to the speech made by Taryn Brumfitt, Australian of the Year (who is a body positivity advocate) @ the National Press Club about a week or so ago - it’s one of the best speeches I’ve heard! She more than deserves to be Aust of the Year!!!!
Whatever you do to gain the shape you want for whatever reason, DO IT SAFELY & DO IT FOR YOURSELF, NO-ONE ELSE! 🙏😊
