Mum redesigns space into secret room: Discover how she did it with Kmart and Ikea purchases
Many of us have cupboards or storage spaces under our stairs or in other nooks of our homes that don't get nearly enough use. But one mum single-handedly found a way to turn a useless area of her house into a functional and stylish space—a secret room for her daughter!
With a few clever purchases from Kmart and Ikea, the creative home stylist organised and decorated an under-stair cupboard into an art room. The room was designed with her daughter's needs in mind since she is interested in writing, animation and gaming.
The space was originally full of plywood shelves and desks with supplies and chalkboards on the walls, with a ceiling decorated with paper cranes.
The mum decided to update it by giving it a sleek black, white and grey colour palette and adding terrazzo benchtops and shelves, as well as a computer monitor mounted on the wall.
The art supplies like coloured pens, paints and notebooks are in new stylish containers, and an IKEA peg board was used to organise them.
Meanwhile, the desk and shelves are lined with adhesive vinyl from Kmart. The retailer has a selection of designs, from black marble and different shades of wood to prints of eucalyptus and palm leaves.
Polaroid photographs also decorate the wall, held with IKEA Curtain wire and Curtain clips. What an ingenious way to elevate a plain wall with meaningful decor.
Open shelf units can also be spotted in the photograph, giving the space a more organised look. Similar shelves can be bought at IKEA, like the JONAXEL Shelving unit, for $30.
The mum shared photos of her daughter's new space on social media, and her work was met with praise by other decor enthusiasts.
'I'm impressed. That is a very well organised work space,' a person said.
A second person commented, 'This is awesome! You are so creative!'
'Wow—I would love this setup, and I'm decades older than your daughter. One lucky young lady,' a third person remarked.
While one social media user wrote, ‘Are you adopting?’
Other homeowners resort to DIY and affordable options from budget retailers for their renovations. In our Cleaning and Home Improvement forum, we often share success stories of DIYers who used their ingenuity to transform their space.
One such sample is Taylah Jayne, who used Kmart’s Modular Brush Storage Box not just for her make-up brushes and pens but also used it to organise her tea and coffee. You can read more about this story here.
There’s also a woman who sourced her living room items from Kmart’s Home & Living range, and her eye for design had taken the room from drab to fab in just a few hours. You can see the transformation here.
Some of us here at the SDC have been pretty busy with home improvement projects recently, and this has certainly given us food for thought for new ideas on how to make use of spaces in our own homes.
What do you think of the art room, members? Are you keen to try this at your own home? If you have other decor ideas, share them in the comments below!
