Mum gets mixed reactions after complaining about supermarket prices: 'Stop lying'

In the age-old battle of the budget, savvy shoppers always look out for the best deals to stretch their dollar further.

With the cost of living on the rise, every cent counts.

It's no wonder that a recent complaint from a mum struck a chord with many Australians.

However, not everyone is ready to jump on the outrage bandwagon.

Melbourne mum Alondra Gataé took to social media to voice her frustration after her shopping experience.

She presented a stark contrast: eight items at Coles, which cost her $72, and a full trolley from ALDI, which came to a total of $172.

At a glance, the difference seemed outrageous—an extra $100 at ALDI apparently bought her two weeks' worth of groceries.

Meanwhile, her Coles haul provided only a handful of items—which included a deodorant, protein pizza slices, frozen dessert sticks, cottage cheese, a shower glove, an avocado, and two cartons of eggs.

'Somebody make it make sense,' she asked as she showed both receipts and the disparity in quantity.

Some sympathised with Ms Gataé, echoed her sentiments about the supermarkets' prices and called for boycotts.

However, some eagle-eyed viewers were quick to point out that the comparison might be more complex than it seems.

'If you are trying to save money, why did you spend $25 on two cartons of free-range eggs?' one comment asked.

Another added, 'You can't compare when you buy the super expensive eggs over the home branded eggs.'

'Buy the same items at each store, or it isn't a true comparison. Stop lying,' a third insisted.

'Eight items, regardless of what they were from Coles, should not cost you $72,' Ms Gataé defended her stance.

She explained that she only shops at Coles for specific items she can't find at ALDI.

In response to the uproar, a Coles spokeswoman encouraged customers to do their price comparisons.

'We are always working hard to deliver value to our customers, particularly with the ongoing cost of living pressures including higher mortgages and rents, energy and fuel,' she said.

'We know customers are always looking for great value, and Coles pricing always aims to deliver this.'
In a previous article, CHOICE kicked off a series of surveys to compare grocery prices across Australia.

The survey, in collaboration with the Albanese government, was meant to monitor supermarket prices in response to public discontent over increasing costs.

Ms Gataé's incident is a reminder that shopping smart requires more than just looking at the bottom line—it's about making informed choices and understanding the value of every purchase.
