Mum’s astonishing discovery in BIG W Children's Section sparks controversy

In an era where children's fashion is as diverse and expansive as ever, the line between trendy and inappropriate can sometimes become blurred.

This was the sentiment echoed by a concerned mother who stumbled upon a certain outfit while browsing the children's section at her local BIG W store.

The discovery has since sparked a heated debate among parents and shoppers alike, with opinions deeply divided over the appropriateness of certain styles for young children.

The mother's shock was palpable as she encountered a mannequin dressed in a ‘sexy’ outfit—a mini black leather skirt paired with a black and white striped top.

Adjacent to this display, a selection of tight-fitting, slightly cropped black tops with straps hung on the racks.

Compelled to capture the moment, the mother snapped a photo and shared it in a private social media group, asking whether others shared her discomfort with the clothing options available for kids.

'Thought it was Supre, but no, it was just the kids' section of BIG W,' she expressed in her post, which has since been removed.

The image and the mother's concern garnered over 400 comments, revealing a community torn.

Some parents lamented the loss of innocence, yearning for a time when children's clothing was unmistakably childlike.

'I miss when kids used to dress like kids,' one parent commented, while another simply stated, 'Too much.'

A third voice added to the chorus of disapproval, stating unequivocally that 'Kids and leather is never a good mix!'

However, the conversation took a turn as some commenters suggested that the issue lay not with the clothes themselves but with the adults interpreting them.

'Ever thought that you're the one sexualising kids in the clothes?' one person challenged, prompting others to reflect on their own perceptions.

'What's the issue?' another asked, while a third commenter defended the outfit, emphasising that it was intended for tweens and not younger children.

'Let's be real here, this is the tween section, not the kids section. We actually liked quite a few options, and the leather skirt is very nice on.’

‘It's a nice length, and there's nothing wrong with those tops either.’ they added.

This discovery at BIG W raises important questions about the evolution of children's fashion.

As members of the Seniors Discount Club, many of you have seen styles come and go, and have witnessed the changing tides of what's considered acceptable for different age groups.

It's a topic that touches on broader issues such as body image, self-expression, and the sexualisation of young people.

As grandparents and concerned citizens, it's crucial to engage in these discussions with an open mind while advocating for the well-being of children. It's also essential to consider the role of retailers and the fashion industry in shaping these trends and to hold them accountable when necessary.

This is not the first time a BIG W product has attracted controversy. Last March, the retailer faced criticism for selling an at-home tattoo kit that was available to all ages without restrictions.

The kit included a tattoo gun, needles, and ink, allowing the purchaser to create real tattoos, posing a health risk. You can read more about that here.

Don’t buy it and move on. Not worth stressing about. If BigW don’t sell any then they won’t have them stock again
I was disappointed to see adult winter hoodies hanging outside a smoke and gift shop in our local shopping centre. Some had F@#K off and another dont be a C#@T printed on them, but others were OK and not offensive. They also had them hanging in full view in the shop window where kids could see them. I think it is a shame that shops would even consider buying in this rubbish to sell, standards have dropped so low in society that people think that this is normal. Are people so desperate for attention that they resort to wearing clothing like this?
