Moulding expectations: Aussie mum’s pizza night goes sour!

When it comes to a family pizza night, expectations are usually set for a delightful evening filled with cheesy goodness and happy faces all around.

However, for one Australian mum, the anticipated joy turned into dismay when she discovered something rather unsavoury lurking in her pizza from a popular supermarket.

As consumers become increasingly vigilant about the quality of their purchases, incidents like this highlight the importance of scrutinising products before bringing them home.


The mum, eager to share her distressing experience, took to social media to voice her discontent.

‘Nooooo, my first bad experience! We’re all sad about this pizza night,’ she lamented in a post that quickly caught the attention of the group.

The culprit? A nasty case of mould had infiltrated the International Cuisine Cheese Pizza, a product sold frozen in a three-pack at ALDI stores.

The discovery was particularly shocking given that the pizzas were purchased that very afternoon and had been stored correctly, according to the mum.

‘Mould!!’ she exclaimed, expressing her disappointment over the ruined dinner plans.

‘I know, so sad, no, they were frozen!! I brought them this afternoon, too, so sad!’


The post sparked a wave of empathy from fellow group members, many of whom were baffled by the presence of mould on a frozen product.

One commenter shared, ‘We cooked these tonight and mine had so much ice in the plastic packaging as if they had thawed out and then been refrozen. Thankfully, no mould, though, I only bought them late this afternoon.’

‘B***** annoying when you are about to cook dinner…! I feel for you…’ another sympathised.

‘For that amount of mould to be on there, you'd assume it's been thawed out for some time,’ a third wrote.

‘Wow, they are my kids' favourite,’ someone else remarked.


The conversation soon expanded as other commenters chimed in with their own tales of mouldy misfortunes involving ALDI products.

‘I got like 6 apples the other day, and they were all rotten within 2 days,’ one commenter said.

‘I took back a 1kg block of cheese yesterday because I opened it on Tuesday morning and it was mouldy at both ends and didn't go out of date ‘til next June,’ another shared.


This isn't the first time ALDI has been under scrutiny for mould-related issues.

Earlier in the year, another customer reported finding a ‘violent-looking’ mould on the tacos in their El Tora Crispy Chicken Soft Taco kit, despite the product having a best before date well into the future.

‘Just opened our taco kit to make dinner and came across these wraps. Best before date 2/11/24 🤮,’ the shopper wrote.

While many commenters shared their disgust in reaction to the post, some also took the opportunity to identify a possible cause.

‘I can see a tiny hole in the bag in the top corner where the mould predominantly is. This can happen with any brand from any supermarket. Take it back for a refund,’ a commenter suggested.

‘ALDI has stringent quality standards, and so we encourage any customer to [give] feedback to ALDI directly via the help centre so we can investigate all allegations of a product not meeting expectations,’ an ALDI spokesperson stated.

What was this person first action - POST IT ON FACEBOOK, instead of going back to ADLI and asking for a replacement or refund. And only then, if they don't help, then they can to post it.

But to many people want their 5 mins of "shock fame" without even trying to have the problem fixed.

I would prefer to try ALDI first, then and only then, if no solution can be found THEN post it.

For the product to have mold growth as seen in the photo, it must have been moldy before freezing the product? Or had mold spores present. Mold will not grow in an environment or temperature below 0 °C. However, if the product is defrosted and there is enough moisture and humidity + 20c to 30c temperatures, mold spores that are present will grow. There are too many variables, were they defrosted in transit then re-frozen? Or were they left out on a kitchen bench for hours in a warm environment? In the end best to just go back to the seller and hope for a re-fund and not post time wasting stories on social media. If people believed half of the sensationalised attention-grabbing stories posted in social media, no one would ever buy anything ever again from any supermarket!
