Mould was ruining her mornings—this $0 trick solved her problem

There’s nothing quite like the comfort of a warm shower—until it’s ruined by something that’s been lurking underfoot.

One woman’s clever solution to this common bathroom annoyance has sparked debate online, with opinions ranging from ‘brilliant’ to ‘just plain odd’.

But could this everyday hack actually be the answer to a cleaner, drier bathroom?

There’s not much worse than stepping out of a hot shower onto a soggy, cold bath mat—and if that damp mat sits for too long, it quickly turns into a breeding ground for mould and foul smells.

But one woman came up with a simple fix that prevents the mess and stink entirely. While her husband thought it was a bit odd, others online were quick to see the genius behind her method.

Lauren shared the now-viral tip on social media, where it had already reached 2.8 million views. In the short clip, she demonstrated how she dried her bath mat using an ordinary coat hanger with clips.

‘My husband thinks this is weird. You put a clothes hanger on the end [of the bath mat], you get out of the shower, you step on it and then when you're done you just hang it up and let it dry so that it's not wet and then when it's time to take a shower again [the bath mat] is dry and you just lay it back down,’ she explained.

She finished with: ‘That's not weird, right? I'm just saying it's not weird if you do that, it's OK I do that too. He's weird.’

Whether or not people found the visual appealing, many agreed the tip was undeniably useful.

One viewer wrote: ‘Not weird, actually very useful. but I still hate it.’

Another added: ‘It's genius. Not aesthetically pleasing, but genius.’

Others admitted it was both strange and smart all at once: ‘Is it weird? Yes. But is it also the most brilliant idea I have ever seen and will I be adopting this going forward? Also yes.’

Lauren’s approach worked because it allowed the mat to dry completely between uses—helping to reduce mould, mildew, and musty smells not just on the mat, but underneath it too. And that’s especially important during the colder months, when materials take longer to dry on their own.

Viewers also offered alternative suggestions, like sewing a small loop onto the bath mat to avoid stepping on the hanger or hanging it over a towel rail, the side of the tub, or the shower itself. One person shared: ‘I folded a small piece of ribbon and handstitch it onto the end and I hang it on a hook to dry, and to keep the cat from peeing on it. 10/10.’

Some followers recommended switching to a stone bath mat, which dries quickly on its own—but not everyone was convinced it was better than Lauren’s method.

‘It's not weird... people say try stone bath mat but at least this one is Free !!’ a man commented.

Another agreed: ‘It's smart. Ignore everyone saying you need a stone bath mat not knowing that a regular bath mat is easier to look after.’

And while the hanger hack definitely helps with moisture control, it’s not a substitute for basic hygiene. Experts still recommend swapping out bath mats for a clean one regularly, and washing them in the machine at least once a week—more often if used frequently.

So, whether you’re into coat hangers or cat-proofing hacks, Lauren’s method showed that sometimes the weirdest ideas are also the most practical.
