Milk Bar​

Ah, milk bars. It wouldn’t be such a long shot to say you all had a local one you grew up with that was filled with things a child would find heavenly. Smarties, sherbets, liquorice straps, caramel buds—maybe even a treat or two from the kind shopkeeper you came to know by name. Oh, those really were the days! Is your favourite milk bar still open? Mine went a very long time ago since I'm 76, but it was definitely a favourite place for me. You could choose to walk home from School and save the 3pence fare to stand and gaze at the glass cabinet full of a host of sugary lollies. There was a real pleasure taking your time while the shopkeeper held a small white paper bag waiting for your choices (you had to take your time - this was important) then putting them in with a little shovel. He would crackle the bag shut and hand it to you and you felt the happiest kid in the world.

We had the absolute best! Bill & Beryl & Aunty Diana (not my aunty), but what everyone called her that. A Huge selection of lollies behind a glass front cabinet. we would go there after Sunday school & you had to think long & hard about what to get! 1c for a spoon of ‘pills’, choc or caramel buddies, choo choo bars, freckles, sooo many! They also made the best hamburgers & thick shakes!

Jim's Milk Bar in Newcastle (Hamilton) - still open, still does 70s style shakes, and lots of lolly and chocolate jars to choose.

Mr and Mrs Green owned our local milkbar and after shopping with my nan we would go in and get a chocolate milkshake for me and nan having either a strawberry milkshake or a lime soda with icecream in a tall glass .

We were so close to 2 milk bars, one across the road, one two doors down! We didn't like to cross the busy road, so went to the other one. It was my favourite place for lollies, Sunny Boys, and comics! Pocket money day was the best. I loved the Donald Duck comics.

When we first came to Australia at the end of 1965 my uncle had a cake shop next door to the milk bar at Waverley in Sydney. It was run by a lovely Italian couple and they made the best milkshakes and hamburgers. Like many members I have fond memories of the lollies - great selection and not expensive.

My parents owned a Milk Bar in William street, Kings Cross and we used to have all the tennis stars coming from White City ie. Ken Rosewall and John Newcombe. My father also invented the chocolate coated ice cream on a stick and lots of people used to come and enjoy it. So I had some very happy memories from my childhood.
