The imperial was confusing, but were based on old agricultural and domestic "rules of the thumb" as it was. Metric only became possible when international standards were developed. Istill tend to think of some materials in imperial... even though I know the metric. For example if I pick up a bit of 4 x 2 timber, almost any chippie knows the metric is 200 x 50..... actually actually nowdays more like 200 x 45 lol
