Metal Ice Cube Trays

Do you remember these classic metal ice cube trays? They were very popular in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and many Aussies used them to create delicious frozen treats at home! From icy cordial blocks to creamy, indulgent treats made with Sunshine powdered milk, these homemade delights were a staple of those hot summer days.

What were your favourite flavours? We'd love to hear your stories! Share your favourite ice block memories with us and take a sweet trip down memory lane.

I member when I was young freezing milk and vanilla in one of these.

My utmost favourite frozen treat has to be the old ice block Hawaiian Delights. Frozen fruit salad with junks of fruit on a stick

Absolutely remember the metal ice cube trays in the freezer. We did eventually change to plastic ones.
Either way it was always great to have ice cubes ready to put into a big glass of cordial. 🧊

Condensed milk ice blocks whipped when frozen ,with milk and vanilla, to make ice cream.

We had those I hated them 🤣

I must say the ice cubes were easier to get, rather than the plastic ones.

No BPA FREE in those days! We were tough as boots

Mum (and her previous generation) left the "dividers" out and used it to make trays of icecream at least once a week in Summer. She used evaporative milk, sugar (there is a lot more sugar in condensed milk), vanilla essence and gelatin dissolved in hot water. I think she covered it with aluminium to stop it from going icy.
The foil didn't touch the icecream. We had a few of those trays. I think some of our new fridges had one included in them. Unfortunately fridges have a "use by date"
