Meet the award-winning journalist taking over ABC’s morning radio show!

As the sun rises and the kettle whistles, the familiar voice that has greeted many Australians over their morning cuppa is set to change.

ABC Radio National Breakfast listeners are about to welcome a new host to their airwaves following the announcement of Patricia Karvelas' departure.

This esteemed journalist is stepping into the role, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a suitcase full of stories from around the globe.

Sally Sara, an award-winning journalist whose credentials include being a two-time recipient of the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award, is no stranger to the ABC audience.

‘Sally has reported from more than 40 countries as an ABC foreign correspondent, including across Africa, Iraq, India and Afghanistan and since 2020 has been presenter of The World Today,’ the ABC said.

The ABC shifted the program's start time to 5:30 am, a half-hour earlier than its traditional 6 am slot.

Sara will be joined by a team of seasoned ABC correspondents, including political correspondent Melissa Clarke, business correspondent Peter Ryan, and news presenter Luke Siddham Dundon, ensuring a comprehensive coverage of news across the spectrum.

In her conversation with Karvelas on the program, Sara expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and eagerness to continue the legacy of in-depth and expansive reporting.

‘I’m very grateful for the chance to join the Radio National Breakfast team, and it’s important to publicly acknowledge all of your hard work on the program and on the many other projects that you’re involved with in the ABC,’ Sara said to Karvelas on the program.

'We’ll be covering what’s going on right across the country and also given the kind of stories that are unfolding internationally as well, obviously, that international news will be hugely important as well.’

Patricia Karvelas, who has been a staple of the ABC lineup since 2014, is not stepping away from the microphone entirely.

She will continue to engage audiences on Q+A and The Party Room podcast while also taking on new challenges with Afternoon Briefing and the Politics Now podcast.

Karvelas said it was time for her to move to a 'new cross-platform role'.

‘I want to thank the ABC for the opportunities it has provided me through my decade here. It continues to be the most important public institution in the country in my view, and I want to help build its connections with voters across the country,’ she said.

‘I’ll miss the Radio National audience enormously. There’s something magical about waking up when the country is asleep to bring the big news and conversations to the country.’

I'll repeat....it's most likely a neckpiece which would be seen in her native land....she should wear it with pride for that reason....I'll refrain from calling your comment rude, however ignorant might be more appropriate Ebby.
