Meet the Aussie pensioner who became the world's oldest father at 92

Parenthood is both a privilege and a responsibility. Becoming a parent means providing love and support to your child while they grow up and discover the world.

We all have the potential to become fantastic parents and make the most of the time we spend with our children.

In light of this, it goes without saying that the process of raising a child is usually reserved for a much younger set of parents.

After all, having a baby at the age of 79, like Robert De Niro did (to the shock of many), raised some eyebrows among the general public.

But did you know that De Niro is not the oldest individual to become a father?

You read that right, folks! Even though the news of Robert De Niro’s and Bernie Eccleston’s children shocked the internet, it’s time to give their story a rest, as it’s actually an Australian pensioner who holds the Guinness World Record for the World’s oldest father!

According to the awards body, Les Colley remains the oldest man in the world to father a child.

He and his partner welcomed Oswald two months before he turned 93. The couple defied all odds, as Colley lived an active, healthy life for almost a century, eventually passing away from pneumonia in 1998, just four months before his 100th birthday.

Meanwhile, Mahmoud al-Adam is the runner-up in the list of the world's most senior fathers, having himself become a proud dad to his 13th child at the age of 92.

However, two other claims await confirmation to challenge Colley's world record.

Ramjit Raghav, a farmer from India, was 94 when his first-born son, Karamjit, came into the world in 2010.

Then, in September 2012, the then-96-year-old and his 54-year-old wife, Shakuntala, had their son Ranjit.

Finally, James E. Smith, a preacher from Illinois, claimed to have had a son with his 38-year-old wife, Anna Smith, in January 1951 – at the impressive age of 101 and 10 months.

However, according to alternative records, Smith may have been 15 years younger when the child was born.

A newspaper article from Southern Illinoisan on April 8, 1959, claimed to have found previous marriage records and Mr Smith’s application for an undertaker's licence, which suggested that he was around 86 years and 10 months old when he claimed to be over 100 years old.

These documents contradict Smith's claim and raise doubts about the authenticity of his supposed achievement.

Key Takeaways
  • Les Colley holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest father, having his ninth child, Oswald, at the age of 92 years and 10 months.
  • Unconfirmed reports suggest two men, Ramjit Raghav and James E. Smith, may have been older than Colley when they fathered children, but there are no official records.
  • Colley lived a healthy and active life, passing away in 1998 from pneumonia just four months before turning 100.
  • Parenthood is a long-term commitment that requires dedication and sacrifice, but it brings immense joy and fulfilment to one's life.

While the official title holder may be subject to debate, it is undeniable that having a child in one's 70s is a remarkable achievement that is rare and not without its challenges.

It raises questions about the child's future and how they may perceive their unique family situation.

While some may view it as a blessing and an opportunity to be raised by experienced parents, others may struggle with the potential loss of their parents at an early age.

Only time will tell how this unconventional family dynamic will impact the child's life.

It’s a sick selfish world we live in!!! Why would you father a child at that age?? For the sake of manhood ego?? What about a child never getting to know his/her father, because he dies of old age a short time after?? 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻

Sorry, but it's sickening. Not fair on the child and one really has to wonder why a young woman would sleep with any man whose old enough to be her great grandfather. What about her parents, her family and their thoughts on the matter with her sleeping not with an older man but a very old man. What did her friends think? For him to declare he was the father means that they were in fact sleeping together.

Why would any normal woman do this unless she saw the $Money Tree and needed proof that the relationship was indeed consummated. How does one prove that any marriage/relationship was consummated. Well, in comes having a baby. There's the proof. Proof of claiming $Everything as his property goes to the next spouse first and then the children, including adult children he had and grandchildren, plus great grandchildren. I dare say also, maybe great great grandchildren.

Not nice. Not good for the child.

Maybe she liked to feel old age creep up on her?
