my 5 and 3 year old sons put 'petrol' in the car for daddy, via the tailpipe and the hose.
Dad was not impressed when he only got a little way down the road before the car stopped. Took him a long time to smile about the incident.

It must have been 1956/57 in England, I did half-day Wednesday at school, bussed 10 miles home for the afternoon. It was mushroom season, and on this day my mother decided to go hunting for them in a nearby field. She found some nice ones in a usual patch, and something caught my eye a few yards away. It was a fresh mushroom - over 1 foot in diameter, it was beautiful! We picked it and went home. A pity that cameras were so expensive & no mobile phones then, of course, so I cannot show you. That mushroom fed 5 of us for the next 5 dinners! And it was YUM!

I used to spend a lot of time in the bush. We lived on a dead end road with a reserve right over the fence.
There was a lot of nasty stuff going on in my home as I was growing up. I used to escape to the bush to get away from the violence. It was a sanctuary.
We had the best cubby house any kid could ever want. My sisters and I put together bits of anything that would brighten up our special little getaway. It was wonderful.
I found myself in there more and more, usually on my own. So, I kept some books there in an old Arnotts biscuit tin. It was peace personified.
Another couple of memories ... I loved drawing hopscotch on the footpath. Coming home from school, I'd do the drawing, play for a while then walk on. I know other kids who walked the same path had fun with it too.
My favourite games at school were elastics. 2 kids put elastic on their legs, and another jumps a series of tricks whilst the elastic is raised higher and higher. Another game was knuckles. I used to save the pig knuckles, paint them different colours and play them as you would Jacks.
Some might be surprised. We were never given toys, and really, didn't need them. We created our own amusement and didn't miss toys. Probably the best game of all was running through the sprinkler in the dead heat of summer.

I do have a special one to share. I used to go early with my Dad when he went fishing at Shelley Beach in Caloundra. He would walk down to the beach, sit and rig his really long cane surf rod, and bait it from his old burlap (I think) fishing bag. Then he would go along to the 'Kelp Hole' where there were supposed to be lots of fish. He'd draw the rod back and cast way out among the kelp, and wait patiently with other fishermen, standing in the shallow water. This is the most peaceful I have ever seen him, he was in another place just gazing out to sea as the sun came fully up. If he caught some fish, then gr eat; but if not it didn't seem to matter much. This was HIS special time where his cares just melted away. That I was allowed to go and just watch him made me feel so special. This is my story.

And a beautiful story thanks for sharing 🥰

Oh yeah we did the sprinkler thing it was such great fun wasn’t it and the dog loved it also 🤩

My most happiest childhood memory was when it was my 12th birthday and that's all I wanted was a basketball but when I came home from school there was no presents, so I went to my bedroom saying not very nice things about my mother to myself ,and there on my pillow was sitting the basketball I dearly wanted and then I thought my mother was best in my whole world and feeling bad saying those things about her.

My happy memory has to be playing in the backyard under the sprinkler with my two sisters and brother . It does seem along time ago
