Massive $60 million Powerball jackpot won by one person — but prize money remains unclaimed
The Lott confirmed that one winner won a whopping $60 million Powerball jackpot after weeks of the prize failing to go off — but the winner has not claimed the prize money yet.

The identity of the sole winner remains a "mystery" due to the fact that the winning entry was not registered to a player card. So far, The Lott officials only know that the winning entry came from a Tatts outlet in inner Melbourne which hints that the winner may be residing in the city.

The Lott is urging all Victorians who purchased an entry ticket for tonight’s draw to check their ticket and make contact to claim their prize.

The numbers in the winning entry were 7, 17, 11, 28, 30, 2, 27 and the Powerball was 11.

“Someone has become an overnight multi-millionaire just as the city’s lockdown ended but possibly doesn’t know it yet,” The Lott spokesperson Ally Ramsamy said in a statement referring to the winner who has won Victoria’s second-biggest ever lottery prize ever.

He added: “we can’t wait for them to discover this winning news. Just imagine how $60 million might change your life and the lives of your nearest and dearest.”

“There are 60 million reasons why all Melbourne players who had an entry in tonight’s draw should check their ticket immediately.”

“If you discover you’re holding the division one winning entry, hold on tight to that ticket and phone 131 868 as soon as possible so that we can start the prize claim process.”

Aside from the first division winner, tonight’s Powerball draw was won by more than 2023 million winners from across divisions 2 to 9. The other winners collectively won a lump sum of $34.29 million.

So far this year, bettors from Australia’s eastern seaboard have struck gold as 12 out of 12 winners of Powerball’s division one draws were from the region — 7 winners in NSW, 4 in Queensland, and 1 in Victoria. The winners collectively won a hefty $410 million in prize money.

A trend shows that of these division one winning entries, half were PowerHit – an entry type unique to Powerball that guarantees the all-important Powerball number needed to win division one.

Matt Hart, a spokesman from The Lott, also supported this claim by saying that PowerHits have certainly featured prominently and helped deliver some massive windfalls.

“To win division one in Powerball, you need to match all seven winning numbers, drawn from a barrel of 35 numbers, and the all-important Powerball number, drawn from a barrel of 20 numbers,” he said.

The study also shows that 9 of the 12 division one winners won through QuickPick entries, an entry type where numbers are randomly chosen.

Meanwhile, only 3 winners are from a marked entry where bettors picked the numbers themselves.

Mr Hart also noted that Thursday’s jackpot was the third time The Lott offered $60 million in prize money.

“The end of 2021 is fast approaching, but Powerball shows no signs of slowing down. We haven’t had any division one winners during the past five weeks, sending the multi-million-dollar jackpot higher and higher,” he said.

“One of this year’s memorable Powerball winners won $80 million and took home Australia’s biggest lottery prize so far this year. That jackpot went to a North Melbourne dad who had been working as a cleaner since he lost his job because of Covid-19 lockdowns.”

Australians took home more than $3.62 billion in prize money from lotto and other games in the 12 months to June 30, 2021.

But before you go out and buy your powerball ticket, you might want to consider the odds. An article from Lottoland states that while the chances of winning any prize in Powerball is a relatively achievable 1 in 25, the probability of winning the jackpot is closer to 1 in 300 million!
