Marching To School

Who remembers the daily school march? Lining up in neat rows, taking your distance, and stepping in time to scratchy old tunes like Colonel Bogey or Turkish Patrol crackling from the gramophone. Some even had to chant their time tables as they marched!

Did your school have its own band or special marching traditions? We’d love to hear your stories!

Who could ever forget, I remember the music they played as we marched into class, it was the American marching band music, I don’t know why we didn’t have an Australian one though

Lining up and marching into class to 'Stars and Stripes forever'. Yes, and the warm milk in summer - yuk!

l don't remember marching but l do remember in the UK saying prayers and singing hymns in the hallway leading to the classrooms before we went it.
When l went to camp school for a month in the holidays we did march in rows into the dining room to the strains of Bachs 'Jesu Joy Of Mans Desiring'.

We wore pleated tunics and not as short as these. I loved "play time" when we dive bombed the milk crates and had drinking competitions against the boys... no-one got my record 15 bottles. I did love my milk and still do. I vaguely remember most of the words prior to march to class...I praise my God, honour my King/Queen, I salute the flag. Wouldn't work these days
