Many benifits of garlic
Legend has it that it keeps vampires at bay... Discover the real good reasons to eat garlic, an ingredient whose virtues will continue to amaze you
The benefits of garlic have been known for centuries. It's well known that garlic scares away vampires, but it can also scare away anyone who gets too close! However, not only does its typical southern taste bring you right back to summer, but these little cloves have more than one trick up their sleeve.
The benefits of garlic, clove by clove
Although its strong smell and particular flavour may put some people off, it has also been recognised for centuries for its health benefits... And some medicines are hard to pass up too!
#1 - Garlic to protect your heart
Several studies have shown that if you eat one or two cloves of garlic raw a day, it improves the fluidity of your blood, thus preventing the formation of clots that can clog your arteries and cause a heart attack.
A little bonus: it also helps to lower bad cholesterol levels, which are also responsible for cardiovascular disease. If raw garlic is too strong for you, you can also eat it cooked, but you'll have to increase the quantity: between three and five cloves a day to hope to benefit from its qualities.
#2 - Garlic to stay slim
"Crunchy and tasty" (if you really like raw garlic), as one of our famous TV chefs would say, garlic is also extremely low in calories (130 calories per 100 g, i.e. about 4 g per clove) and has a very low glycemic index.
So, not only does garlic spice up dishes, as we have seen, but it also has a diuretic effect. Rich in fructose and potassium, it stimulates the metabolism. In other words: two in one, this little magic food helps you feel full and helps you eliminate. An essential ingredient if you are planning a detox, for example.
Garlic and its benefits
#3 - Garlic to stay young!
For this, thank its antioxidants, especially selenium, which help protect the skin from the sun. Garlic is also very rich in vitamin C, which is essential for energy, and vitamin B6, which promotes good stress management - a major cause of ageing. It is probably no coincidence that garlic is an essential part of the Mediterranean diet, which is renowned for its healthy centenarians.
#4 - Summer food, best friend in winter
The allicin contained in garlic is antibacterial and anti-infectious. This discovery was made by Louis Pasteur in 1858, who discovered that bacteria died when they were sprayed with garlic juice.
A simple remedy, for example, to get rid of a mild flu: regularly inhaling pieces of crushed garlic. Effective, but not very discreet. If you don't live alone, you can use dried garlic (2 to 4 g of powder, three times a day) to prevent a cold, or if it is already too late, as a tincture (2 to 4 ml, three times a day).
#5 - A notorious anti-carcinogen
If consumed in a significant way, i.e. between one and two cloves of garlic per day, garlic reduces the risk of cancer of the stomach, throat, oesophagus, colon and ovary. And all this is thanks to its sulphur compounds, including allicin, already mentioned above for its antibacterial and anti-infectious properties, which are released when garlic cloves are chopped, cut or crushed. On the other hand, these same substances are responsible for its heady smell, which some people love. Tastes and colours are not up for discussion.
One last piece of advice to avoid undesirable side effects. If you have trouble digesting it, start by eating it cooked before gradually switching to raw. Finally, never forget to remove the green germ in the middle.
Beware: too much garlic can cause heartburn.
From now on, you can use it to make soups with pistou on winter evenings. Or delicious garlic bread to accompany a salad, or candied garlic to nibble on as an aperitif. You can't imagine what garlic can do for you.
