Manufacturers recall faulty life jackets and vehicles over critical defects

Recent recalls have highlighted critical safety issues involving life jackets and specific Hyundai and Genesis vehicles.

Companies have provided guidelines to address these issues, emphasising the importance of prompt responses from affected individuals. Staying informed and following recommended steps is crucial to mitigate these risks effectively.

Consumers are encouraged to review the recall details carefully and act swiftly to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

The recall, which affects a range of life jackets with faulty inflators, was issued after discovering that the inflators could falsely indicate readiness for use, even when the gas cylinder is empty, not correctly connected, or entirely removed.

This defect poses a significant risk of drowning, as the life jacket may fail to inflate in an emergency when the manual inflator is activated.

The affected life jackets were sold at well-known retailers, including BCF, Anaconda, Marlin Australia, Life Jacket Solutions, Compleat Angler, and Tackle World, between 14 June 14 2021 and 20 December 2024.

The recall targets explicitly inflators marked '3F Single Point Manual Inflator V96000 Halkey Roberts ®', manufactured from 4 June 2021 to 15 April 2024.

The models in question include Life Jacket Solutions (LJS) with model numbers T150M, G150M, B150M, WB100, PR150M, and SRSS150, as well as the Marlin model number MK150.

If you or someone you know has purchased one of these life jackets, it is crucial to stop using it immediately and seek an alternative for your safety.

Customers are urged to return the faulty life jackets to the place of purchase for a full refund.

For those affected by this recall, further information can be obtained by contacting the Halkey-Roberts Corporation on 1800 005 224 or via email at [email protected].

Meanwhile, the recall related to Hyundai and Genesis vehicles, including the 2021-2024 Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Genesis GV60, GV70, and G80 models.

According to the recall notice, the issue is a software fault that could cause the 12-volt battery to stop working.

This is not just a minor inconvenience; it's a serious safety concern.

The affected vehicles, stamped as 2021 to 2024 models, may have been sold later, so checking if your car is on the list is crucial.

For those who may not be as tech-savvy, the 12-volt battery in your car is responsible for powering the vehicle's electrical systems when the engine isn't running.

It's also what gives that initial jolt to start the engine. If this battery fails, you could find yourself stranded or, worse, lose motive power while driving, increasing the risk of an accident.

The Ioniq 5 and 6 recall, issued on 20 December 2024, supersedes an earlier recall from April 2024.

An additional 45 affected vehicles have been identified, bringing the total number of recalled Ioniq 5 and 6 electric cars to 3,566.

Meanwhile, Genesis—Hyundai's luxury division—has recalled 572 examples of its GV60 and GV70 SUVs and the G80 sedan.

The recall notices are alarmingly clear: 'A loss of motive power whilst driving could increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.'

Interestingly, these recall notices are related to others recently published for the Kia EV6, which shares much of its architecture with the Hyundai and Genesis models.

For those affected, Hyundai and Genesis have advised owners to contact their preferred dealership to schedule an appointment for a software update, which will be done at no extra cost.

This is a relief, as it means there won't be any additional financial burden on you to ensure your vehicle is safe.

To check if your vehicle is affected by the recall, Hyundai and Genesis have provided lists of affected VINs, which can be downloaded from their websites.

If you're unsure how to find your car's VIN, it's usually on the driver's side dashboard and can be seen through the windshield or on a sticker inside the side door jamb.

For more information, owners can contact Hyundai Customer Care at 1800 186 406 or Genesis Australia at 1800 908 070.
