Man triggers hospital bomb scare with 'explosive' emergency

Now, this is a story we never thought we’d have to report…
Recently, an 88-year-old man from Toulon, France visited Sainte Musse Hospital, requiring assistance with an unusual problem.
It appeared as though the elderly man had lodged a World War I artillery shell in his… bottom.
Predictably, upon finding out about the situation, officials had to take action.
A hospital spokesperson said all incoming patients were quickly diverted and the emergency services, as well as a bomb disposal team, were marched in to assess the risk of any potential blast.
‘We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework,’ they added. ‘When in doubt, we took all the precautions.’
We must note that experts onsite were confident that the item wouldn’t go off while inside the man, and the hospital was subsequently informed. (A good thing, considering the blast would have ‘rectum’... Sorry, we had to.)
‘They reassured us by telling us that it was a collector’s item from the First World War, used by the French military,’ the spokesperson added.
Doctors were able to retrieve the ammunition without incident.
Don’t ask us why they did it, but reportedly, the doctors behind the extraction of the shell measured it: it’s 20cm long and 5cm wide.
The senior is believed to have inserted the projectile into himself for sexual pleasure.
One doctor was said to have said: ‘An apple, a mango or even a can of shaving foam, we are used to finding unusual objects inserted where they shouldn’t be.’
‘But a shell? Never!’
The man is now said to be ‘in good health’ and is expected to fully recover.
Believe it or not, the 88-year-old isn’t the first — and probably won’t be the last — case of things ending up shoved in places of the body where the sun doesn’t shine.
Last April in Brazil, a 54-year-old man visited a hospital complaining of stomach cramps and pain, but a subsequent examination revealed he was clinically stable. That is until an x-ray showed he had a 20cm dumbbell weighing two kilograms lodged in his rectum!
The popular medical website WebMD even lists fruits, vegetables, bottles, and candles among ‘common’ foreign objects found in rectums (though it bears mentioning while most of these come in via rear insertion, a few every now and then come in by ingestion and then get stuck).
Among the more unusual objects include: a barbie head, a light bulb, and a live eel.
WebMD says that most people who come in for hospital visits with foreign bodies display no symptoms at all. Things start getting dangerous though when the object remains stuck for so long that complications may arise, which include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, and bleeding.
Speaking of, erm, functions, did you know that holding back your bowel movement (as in suppressing the urge to go) has pretty nasty consequences? Read on to know why!
