Love avocados? Here’s what you can do to keep them fresh ‘for months’

Many of us are big fans of avocados – they’re delicious, nutritious, and versatile. They make a great addition to any dish, whether it’s sweet or savoury.

However, as much as we love them, we can’t help but be frustrated by how quickly they go bad once they've ripened! The window between ripe and overripe is so small that it can be difficult to use them all before they start to brown and turn mushy inside.

It seems like such a waste when this happens, but this expert shared a way to keep your avocados fresh for months!

Alyssa, a low-waste expert from eco-organisation Brightly, revealed her simple method for preserving the fruit for months.

And according to her, the secret is in the storage.

‘If you eat avocados often, you know that they can spoil very quickly,’ Alyssa said.

She continued: ‘With this method I’m about to show you, you can keep them fresh for up to four months, which is a crazy amount of time.’

In a video posted on Facebook, Alyssa revealed that storing avocados in a freezer makes them last up to four months.

She cut open an avocado she had frozen three months earlier, and showed viewers how the fruit seemed ‘just as fresh as the day she bought it’.

Alyssa explained that because she buys her avocados in bulk, she needs to store most of them so ‘they keep well for meals and recipes weeks later’. She separates a couple that she plans on eating for the week, and then stores the rest in the freezer.

She claimed that this method is ‘basically like freezing time’.

Experts have reported that avocados, once ripe, are only good for about three days before they start to rot.

But cold has been found to slow down the ripening, hence buying unripe avocados and storing them in the freezer might make them last longer.

Alyssa also shared that once taken out of the freezer, she lets avocados sit at room temperature for an hour.

‘Now, you have fresh avocado for months to come,’ she continued.

The expert also said that this ‘hack’ works for fully-ripened avocados that have not browned or gone mushy yet.

Does she mean unripe avocados? Won't they still be unripe once thawed out.

I've heard of the "press the top" method of establishing the ripeness of an Avocado but is there a more scientific way of establishing ripeness? Please.

Just feeling the avo , if it feels hard then it's not ready but kept out of the fridge it will rippen in a couple of days.

If it is slightly soft , like lost the real firmness then it ready

Soft is ready.

When it feels very soft and lighter then it's over ripe.

I buy most firm with a couple slightly soft
