Long receipt for one item leaves Woolies shopper wondering why

Shopping at Woolworths can be a convenient and pleasant experience, but one shopper recently encountered something peculiar and unexpected that left them scratching their head.

Imagine this: you are just about to finish your shopping, and the cashier hands you a receipt so long that it would make the Murray river look like a stream.

The shopper was so taken aback by the length of the receipt that they took to social media to share their shock and disbelief.

The photo they posted showed the receipt stretched out almost the length of the car's windscreen and steering wheel, leaving us wondering if this was a new form of paper art.

The shopper asked on social media, 'All of this paper for one item. Is this really necessary?'

The post quickly got the attention of people on social media, leaving many to question the need for such lengthy receipts, especially as the world tries to move towards a more eco-friendly and sustainable future.

This isn't the first time shoppers have raised concerns about the excessive length of receipts from the supermarket. In fact, it has become a recurring theme among several shoppers, with reports of receipts measuring the length of, quite literally, an arm or a leg.

One shopper shared images on social media to show that her Woolworths docket measured the length of her arm after buying just one item. Another customer shared on social media that her receipt was as long as her leg after purchasing a handful of items from the supermarket.

These receipts, which often include shopping offers and store information, have left some shoppers questioning the necessity of such excessive uses of paper.

It's not often that a receipt becomes the center of attention, but these lengthy Woolworths receipts are leaving customers scratching their heads and raising concerns.

But it’s not all negative, and we have to give credit where it’s due. In response to customers' complaints regarding long receipts, Woolworths has now made it possible for Everyday Rewards members to opt for paperless receipts.

The spokesperson from Woolies said: 'Our eReceipts functionality available within the Everyday Rewards app was launched with the goal of streamlining the checkout experience for customers whilst also supporting our wider group sustainability commitments.'

The eReceipts feature has been a hit among shoppers, with over one million members choosing to opt out of paper receipts. This has resulted in an average savings of 13 metres of paper per customer each year!

It's a debate that has divided shoppers for years, and as the world moves towards a more digital future, the question remains: are paper receipts becoming a thing of the past?

Some argue that the convenience and eco-friendliness of digital receipts outweigh the sentimental value of paper. Others, on the other hand, say that paper receipts are a necessary part of the shopping experience and should be preserved.

So, members, what's your take on the paper vs digital receipts debate? Let us know in the comments!

I don’t care how long the receipt is. I just want to be given one without having to ask for it, and without being asked if I want one. Most supermarkets and many other retail outlets either ask if you need your receipt or don’t offer a receipt, especially for small purchases. I want to be able to check immediately that I’ve been charged correctly. And if I have to take an item back for some reason, I want proof of purchase in my hand.
I agree. I think by not giving me a receipt they hope that I will not find the incorrect price on an item for which they will have to refund me the total amount charged.

😂😂😂😂😂
This answer is as stupid as the ridiculous response to self serve checkouts.

Why on earth would it be a problem to have a digital receipt directly on your phone which takes seconds to look at and check? I check mine as soon as I'm out of the door. Twice I've found something wrong, gone back into customer service and sorted out straight away.

So because of people like you they've got to waste many dollars on keep buying thousands of paper rolls for their tills because some people don't want to be in the modern age? 🙄
Because of people like you they just make a greater profit which they do not pass on to their customers. My phone is just that - a phone - not a place to store supermarket dockets & other junk stuff.

And, what about the people who do not have mobile phones or, have a mobile phone but do not have the internet! Not everybody can afford or want a mobile phone and or internet!
Or those of us that have a Smart Phone but the Phone is much smarter than they are!!I hate Apps with a passion, they confuse the hell out of me, even if shown how to use said app I will forget the instructions by the time I need to use it again. I am a member of Woolies rewards but only use the card never the App. So paper docket for me.

I totally agree. My mobile phone is only turned on if I want to make a call. I don't want anybody ringing me when I'm out. I do not have any apps on my phone. Don't know how to install them or how to use them & don't really want to know.

As I’m reading this I’m thinking why not get my receipt by email, however this is another good option
Not a good option. Why would I give my email address to the checkout person so they can email me my receipt? What about when you get home & check your email & find you have been overcharged for something? How do you get your refund? In my local Woolies they want to sight the receipt & the item & then go & check on the shelf that I'm telling the truth. This definitely would not work with an email receipt.

You can check your items off on your paperless receipt just the same and also use it to go back and get refunds, if I can do it, anyone can do it.
No I can't do it. My phone is a phone not an office filing cabinet. Give me a receipt so I can check what you have charged & that you have not entered the same item twice or overpriced.

Then, of course, with the non-use of cash looming for when you do your shopping and getting more strongly endorsed by the financial end of town, that is going to make life in general for the older generation soooo much better, isn't it?
Businesses like us to use cards instead of cash because it is so much easier to overspend when you don't actually see how much cash remains in your purse/wallet. Yet another reason why so many people get into financial difficulties these days.

I signed up for digital receipts. Great idea...but. They do not arrive in your phone instantly. I find that I have driven home and only then has it arrived on my phone. By this time it is too late to check if I have been overcharged and then I have to drive back and get a refund. This happened last week. Item at half price on clearance and I was charged full price. I was over charged two dollars fifty cents. I even messaged woolworths to complain and never had the courtesy of a reply.
For most of us it is not worth the trouble to drive back to get a refund. For me it would cost me more in petrol than the value of the refund as I have to drive 45km to my closest Woolies.

I went into woolies today to pick up a packet of nappies for my grandson and 2 packet of sausages . I was in a hurry and didn't scan my card so receipt printed out and couldn't believe how long it was.

Got home to find out I got the wrong size nappies even though I know his weight is in the size frame 🙃

Didn't realise how many different Huggie nappies there are

If you don't have a paper receipt to check the price you have been charged this will make it easier for Woolies (& other supermarkets) to overcharge with little risk they will be found out. I check my paper receipt before I leave the car park & have often found I have been overcharged for something. This allows me to easily go back inside the store & get a refund. This is also another way supermarkets can make bigger profits which would not be passed to their customers. First, self-serve checkouts so they don't pay for staff, now "paperless receipts". What next? Do they want me to mop the floor or stack their shelves?
I check my electronic receipt before I leave the supermarket

If you are a Woolworths Rewards member you can opt for digital receipts like I did. I am flabbergasted that Woolworths does this (long paper receipts for a few items) because of their campaign to remove paper receipts for Rewards members! And I hope everyone bears in mind that Till receipts are NOT recyclable, due to the properties in the ink that is used.

If you don't have a paper receipt to check the price you have been charged this will make it easier for Woolies (& other supermarkets) to overcharge with little risk they will be found out. I agree. I prefer paper receipts but they are too long now. I have also been over-charged many times. I now try to remember to check the receipt when I've just gone through the checkout and I'm right there with the items in the trolley instead back at the car. They can then view the trolley and see the overcharge. Or something like bananas, I was overcharged the Cavendish bananas and charged the most expensive ones at $7.90 p/kilo which I have never purchased. Plus, the checkout lady did it deliberately as well even though I and other customers were pleasant to her. I'm guessing that she was having a bad day and was taking it out on everyone. It was in the express lane and this was the Service Desk as well. They ended up refunding me the whole amount. I had little money and every cent counted and I couldn't work out why the amount was about $5-$6 more than expected. Well, the receipt said it all. Always best to have the items there in the trolley, all of them, so that the Staff member can see for themselves the overcharge. Another year, before covid I was overcharged $14 for the Quilton 36x pack of toilet paper. Charged too many. That $14 was something I could not have afforded if I went home. Same thing, I checked the receipt and found the staff member had pressed 3 packs instead of 2.

I prefer paper receipts as I now have cognitive and memory issues. Easier to look at a whole receipt rather than even try and remember 1-2 items and amounts and then roll the screen to look at more items and amounts. Plus, I'm very basic on my mobile. Only turned on when I go shopping, medicals. But I had noticed that it is now too big, even for one to a few items.

I use my paper receipts and will always ask for one. The reason being - I use an excel spreadsheet to record ALL of my expenses, so when I see what I spend on "useless" stuff, I can cut down on my spending. I use the Woollies one to separate fridge/freezer, fruit and veg, household/cleaning, meat and pantry. This shows over the month where all of my money goes. I have been doing this for years and it helps me to not overspend on stuff (like t/a ). Having the paper receipt allows me to sit at my computer when I get home, and add up all the different categories. (P.S. if anyone wants to know more about the spreadsheet, just ask).
I don't have internet on my phone, so no emails. I can see absolutely no use in it. I am not going to up my plan just to suit woollies. I use a laptop and tablet for emails and internet. My phone is for calls and messages, I do a lot of driving as I live away from a major country town, so can't use my phone much when out. You need a copy to check against your credit card/bank record at the end of month.

Yes I quite like being able to have a digital receipt, my biggest complaint is self-serve checkouts. The more they have means there will be less jobs for people.

I remember about 40 years ago when I shopped at Coles and my full trolley of groceries came to over $275 and had a real panic till I checked down the receipt and discovered that I had been charged $200 for a jar of coffee. We had not been in the country very long!

Because of people like you they just make a greater profit which they do not pass on to their customers. My phone is just that - a phone - not a place to store supermarket dockets & other junk stuff.
I'm saving them some money as they don't have to waste it having to buy so many paper till rolls because people like you still insist on having an old fashioned paper receipt for some reason?🤔 Of course they've got to make a profit, great or otherwise, or they'd go bust. They're not a charity.

Obviously you have proof they don't allegedly pass their profits on to their customers and can tell us how much this is every year? And obviously you know the massive amount of annual costs these companies have, staff costs being the highest, and still be lucky enough to make a profit.

What inconvenience is it that your receipts are stored in your Rewards app? It's not as if they suddenly pop up in your way when you're looking for something else. You'd rather rummage through a lot of paper receipts if you have a dispute about something then just look at your phone where they're all in one place? I assume they're all recycled after a while?

I don’t care how long the receipt is. I just want to be given one without having to ask for it, and without being asked if I want one. Most supermarkets and many other retail outlets either ask if you need your receipt or don’t offer a receipt, especially for small purchases. I want to be able to check immediately that I’ve been charged correctly. And if I have to take an item back for some reason, I want proof of purchase in my hand.
I am not interested in these digital receipts; paper ones allow me to check my purchases which every now and then, have errors in them. I am also part of a Homescan group and need this paper receipt to record my purchases. Btw, totally agree with Thecheesequeen's comments.
