Locked out and forced to cough up $5,000?! The vacation horror story every family must read before booking a hotel!

Traveling is supposed to be an escape from the everyday, a chance to relax and create cherished memories with loved ones. However, for one family, their much-anticipated getaway turned into a financial and emotional ordeal that serves as a cautionary tale for all of us dreaming of our next holiday.

Natasha Oakden, a 24-year-old from the UK, along with her fiancé Courtney Bogacki, Courtney’s parents, Emma and Sam Lewis, and their four-week-old baby Ava, set off for what they hoped would be a dream vacation in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The family booked their £5,724 (A$11,000) holiday through Loveholidays, eager to soak up the sun and enjoy some quality time together. But their joy was short-lived when, just a day after their departure, the parent company of Loveholidays, FTI Group — Europe’s third-largest tour operator — announced it had filed for insolvency.

Three days into their stay, the family's situation took a turn for the worse. Natasha and Courtney were shocked to find themselves locked out of their hotel room, greeted by a note instructing them to contact the hotel desk immediately. The timing was fortuitous, as Emma had taken baby Ava to the other room to feed her just minutes before, ensuring that the family wasn't completely without shelter.

Upon confronting the hotel staff, the family was blindsided by the demand to re-pay their hotel fees, amounting to a staggering A$5,100, due to FTI Group’s insolvency. If they failed to pay, they were told they'd be evicted from the premises. The family was understandably distraught, feeling abandoned by the company they had trusted with their holiday plans.

'We as a family feel drained and are so disappointed with how the company has gone about the situation,' Natasha lamented to Luxury Travel Daily. 'We are so let down and feel on edge constantly. It’s been a very upsetting and difficult situation for us. We would not wish this on anyone, it's truly heartbreaking.'

The stress and anxiety of the situation were palpable. The family, who had envisioned a serene first holiday with baby Ava, found themselves in a state of panic, questioning whether they were victims of a scam and scrambling to verify the tour operator's insolvency from abroad.

In the midst of their turmoil, Natasha received a glimmer of hope via an Instagram message from Loveholidays, promising that their dedicated team would contact the hotel to make the necessary payments and arrangements. The travel agent acknowledged that a 'small number' of customers might be affected by the insolvency and vowed to resolve the issues as swiftly as possible.

This harrowing experience underscores the importance of vigilance when booking a holiday. It's a stark reminder that even with reputable companies, unforeseen circumstances can arise that may jeopardize travel plans and lead to unexpected costs. Here are some tips to help protect yourself and your family from similar travel nightmares:

1. Travel Insurance: Always purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers insolvency to safeguard against financial losses.

2. Research: Before booking, research the financial stability of the travel company and read recent customer reviews for any red flags.

3. Payment Methods: Use credit cards for bookings when possible, as they often offer consumer protection against fraud and company bankruptcies.

4. Keep Records: Maintain detailed records of your bookings, payments, and correspondence with travel companies.

5. Stay Informed: Monitor news about your travel company and destination leading up to your trip to catch any potential issues early.

6. Emergency Contacts: Have a list of emergency contacts, including your travel agent, insurance company, and local embassy, in case of trouble.

This is good advice l believe.

Every week we hear in the news of a company which has gone into liquidation. These can be a Caravan Co., Travel Agent or home builder. Only recently here in W.A. we heard about a home builder whose clients are concerned because they have been waiting years for completion of their new home. The State Government may become involved.

Travel Insurance is a must have for any overseas trip & the rest of the advice is possibly something we wouldn't have thought about.
