Life sounds the buzzer: Basketball legend Jerry West passes away at 86

Basketball fans around the world are mourning the loss of one of the sport’s greatest icons.

Known for his remarkable skill and enduring legacy, this legendary figure's contributions to the game have left an indelible mark.

His passing marks the end of an era, prompting reflections on his extraordinary career and the impact he had both on and off the court.

Jerry West, also known as ‘Mr Clutch’ for his uncanny ability to deliver game-winning shots, passed away on Wednesday, 12 June, at the age of 86.

West's influence on the sport extended far beyond his on-court heroics. His silhouette famously became the basis of the NBA logo, a fitting tribute to a man who was the very embodiment of basketball excellence.

Jerry West's storied career earned him a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame not once but three times.

He was first inducted as a player in 1980, a testament to his remarkable skills and contributions to the game.

His second induction came in 2010 as a member of the 1960 US Olympic Team, and he was set to be enshrined for a third time later this year as a contributor—a nod to his successful tenure as an executive.

The Los Angeles Clippers, where West served as a consultant, announced his passing in a statement, honouring him as ‘the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him’.

His wife, Karen, was by his side at the time of his passing, providing a poignant image of love and partnership until the very end.

During his illustrious playing career, West was a 14-time All-Star and a 12-time All-NBA selection.

He was a key player on the 1972 Lakers team that clinched the championship. In 1969, despite being on the losing side, his performances were so extraordinary that he was awarded the NBA Finals MVP. He was also selected as a part of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team.

Jerry West's impact on basketball wasn't confined to his playing days.

As a general manager, he was instrumental in building the Los Angeles Lakers' Showtime dynasty, contributing to eight NBA championship teams.

His executive career also included successful stints with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Golden State Warriors, and the Los Angeles Clippers, where his keen eye for talent and strategic acumen continued to shape the future of the sport.

I have never heard of him and asked both my son and son inlaw who are both NBA addicts. My son inlaw has gone to the States just to go to an LA Lakers game and neither have heard of him.

However my condolences go out to his family and may he rest in peace 🙏
