Leaving phones behind for 'silent walking': A new social media trend?

In today’s digital world, it’s becoming more difficult to put the smartphone down for even a few minutes. Without constantly being connected online, some of us might fear missing out on a lot.

However, a new social media trend is encouraging younger people to take a step back from technology.

This might be the newest craze to hit the youth—leaving their phones at home and heading out for a 'silent walk'.

The trendsetter of this new craze is Los Angeles-based 28-year-old podcast host Mady Maio.

Taking to the platform, she challenged her almost 50,000 followers to participate in the ‘movement’, which consists of taking a walk and leaving all distractions entirely behind.

She explained in a video online, ‘My sweet boyfriend challenged me to walk without distractions. No air pods, no podcast, no music: just me, myself and I.’

Mady described her experience of trying it: ‘The first two minutes are mayhem. Your mind is racing, you're going to have anxiety. But something happens after two minutes where your brain just gets into this flow state and suddenly you can hear yourself.'

Her post was viewed over 500,000 times (before it was deleted), and her challenge has been accepted by several social media personalities, posting videos and stories of them taking breaks from their phones and doing a 'silent walk'.

Arielle Lorre, another podcast host, has proposed her take on the concept, which she called the ‘silent girl walk’.

According to her, the 'benefits of being in nature were indisputable', but it is a 'rare thing to be outside these days without being distracted.'

The trend had taken off online, and it’s now being spoken about as a ‘wellness trend.’

One person said that walking ‘saved her life’ after her divorce and that she had to ‘build up her ability to walk in silence.’

A woman also described her silent walking for 30 minutes as a ‘session.’

Another user thanked Mady for making this trend, saying ‘Mady Maio you started something great!!’

‘It’s literally the best!! I walk all the time and love my silent walking time,’ another commented.

However, some aren’t too thrilled by this new trend. Some said that Mady is taking credit for something that has always been done for the longest time.

One commented, ‘Gen X was silent walking before it was cool.’

‘OMG... This is not new... Get over it,’ said another user.

Despite the ongoing social media craze, walking has long been considered an exercise regime and it brings a lot of health benefits. In our previous story, one woman lost almost 30 kg with one simple change in her daily routine—walking. You can check out her story here.

My phone is always in my bag when I'm out and about. Most times I don't hear it ring or when a text comes through, only realise that has happened when I go to check the time. But that changes when my grandkids are with me as I like to take photos of the them at the places I take them to so they have memories.

I like to not have anything with me, even my keys when I walk - but that can be difficult so I take my car key off the ring and put into my jeans or active wear pocket.
Walking with no distraction is my meditation!

Great work for the young girl who is helping our young generation to realise what is benefiting them. We all know they are big on influencers and not on us oldies who know everything 🤣

I agree this has been going on for years but the distraction of talking, listening and not looking where they are going with a phone the only thing that seems to be in their sights can be very frustrating, not to say downright dangerous. So many walk across the road with their eyes on their phones.

My husband will often tug at my hand to move me out of someone's way when we're in a shopping centre. And I tell him I'm not moving for anyone that has their head buried in their phone. Same goes for someone pushing a shopping trolley and using their phone. Another thing that is annoying is people walking aimlessly towards me on the left of the pathway, road, steps etc.; here in Australia we keep, or should be keeping, to the left. I just refuse to move and literally stand my ground making these people move out of my way. Bump into me and you will hear all about it. Feisty, my husband says I am!! I will only give way to an elderly or disabled person without thinking twice about doing that.

I try to never take my phone out of the house.... then GOOGLE and all the agencies tracking people have no idea where Iam... except for the areas covered by surveillance cameras.

I frustrate some family n friends by not being attached to mobile by an umbilical cord. So be it! I don't see why I need to ne available to interruption 24/7!

And those surveillance areas are very, very large, so you can run but you can't hide anymore.
