It's no secret that David 'Kochie' Koch is a bit of a character on Channel 7's Sunrise.
He usually provides useful commentary, insightful news, and an overall friendly face to get morning TV viewers out of their beds.
But sometimes, no matter how good of a reporter Kochie is, things can take a wild turn — and that’s what happened recently on the morning show.
The segment was going smoothly with Edwina Bartholomew talking about the buzz surrounding Robbie’s new Netflix film Babylon and how its watch time of three hours is worth it.
However, things started to take a turn when Kochie chimed in to confirm if the film actually ran for three hours.
The host questioned: 'Three hours? I thought only Avatar (a James Cameron film) went that long.'
Edwina then continued talking about the buzz surrounding Robbie's on-screen kiss with Brad Pitt, surprising her co-host Kochie.
'Is Brad Pitt in it?' Kochie, who obviously has not seen the film, asked in surprise.
Edwina responded: 'Yeah, you wouldn’t know from the billboards, it’s just Margot.'
Their co-host Nathalie 'Nat' Barr also joined in the conversation, pointing out that Robbie and actor Brad Pitt had recently sat next to each other at the Golden Globe Awards.
This prompted Kochie to give a response that no one saw coming...
'Oh, I missed that. I was growing my tomatoes,' he remarked.
While there was no clear connection between the movie and Kochie’s gardening, this triggered something within the crew that sent everyone into fits of laughter.
Nat joked: 'I barely believe you are growing your own vegetables.'
'Funny he’s never brought any in.'
'My strawberries are quite small,' Kochie replied, prompting a brief silence among the hosts and crew members.
'And so are the tomatoes, but they’re beautiful and juicy.'
Nat then crossed to Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur for a preview of The Morning Show, and things got weirder from there.
The Sunrise crew erupted into laughter once more as Gillies grinned: 'Just don’t show us your eggplant, that’s all I ask.'
Kochie asked: 'What does she mean by that?'
Emdur chimed in: 'Yeah, what do you mean by that?'
'I’m not partial to an eggplant, but bring me big tomatoes,' Gillies remarked.
Kochie then responded to this, joking: 'How big do you like your eggplant?'
We don’t quite understand how the conversation made the transition either, but it certainly was one well worth watching.
The whole moment got even more bizarre when Edwina Bartholomew crossed back to Kochie, who was in the middle of speaking about his tomatoes again.
Edwina quipped: 'I’m partial to an eggplant, I just don’t want to see Kochie’s!'
While the final outcome was a collective shock of confusion and laughter, we certainly enjoyed the interruption and unexpected deviation from the everyday segment.
It’s safe to say members, this Sunrise moment wasn’t what anyone was expecting (and is definitely one for the books)!
