Kmart mums asked: What makes a house a home?
Kmart is the go-to place for Aussies who are looking to redecorate and even renovate their homes. Their affordable selection of furniture, appliances, bedding, and other home decorations and equipment is definitely the reason why this retail chain is loved by so many Australians.
In a post by certified Kmart mum Emma K. in the Kmart Inspired Homes Facebook group, she asked fellow Kmart fans: What are their tips on making a house a ‘home’?

One Facebook user wrote: "A home is a haven for the people you love, filled with things you love. It's somewhere to express yourself, not be influenced by others, it's yours to fill with love. Having the latest and greatest won't/doesn’t matter and never will if your home makes your family feel secure."
Another added: "Fill your home with all the things you love, things you've always loved but at the same time couldn't afford, things that bring back memories, photos of loved ones, layer your items, use textures, buy comfortable furniture, have rugs, throws, and cushions, plants and nice smells, lamps."

"Comfort and character, make it a place where people are comfortable to sit and relax and converse and put your personality into it so it has character and life," one user wrote.
A number of users note that aesthetics is important in transforming your house into a home.
"Style it to your (and others who live there's) personal taste. Make sure furniture is comfortable, warm it up with rugs, cushions and blankets and make sure large rooms aren't too empty. Use scents if you're into them," one comment said.
"Plants, art, and cushions that spark joy," wrote another.
A third wrote: "Art, photos, rugs/cushions for texture and plants. If you can look at something and it gives you a memory that's home."
Meanwhile, a number of mums agreed that feeling their children’s presence in their house is the essence of a home.
One mum wrote: "a messy house with kids toys everywhere knowing that they are having fun is a home, comfy, lived in, memories are created."
"Let the kids make a mess with toys everywhere. Just avoid stepping on the lego. They hurt," another wrote.
One mum jokingly said that mountains of washing, toys on the floor, and spills and messes are what make her house a home — something she never planned for herself until her 5 kids came along.

A hilarious, sarcastic comment written by Facebook user Storm K. shows that your house’s mess is part of it turning into a home. In her comment, she said that fake plants, a spot in the house that can be a dump collector, washing that is scattered everywhere, nicknames for your surrounding neighbours that are nowhere near their names, rugs, cheesy signs such as "this house runs off love and coffee", and a singular dead plant that was living as a reminder why you have artificial plants are the elements that make her house a home.
