Courtney Farrell was casually browsing the Broadway store in Sydney one Friday night when something caught her eye—a clothing rack brimming with significantly discounted items, including fleece shorts.
She posted a video, sharing her discovery with social media: ‘Kmart PSA – biggest discount rack hack? At 7:30 pm at night in Kmart, all of a sudden they put out a 20c rack.’
The items weren’t just discounted—they were slashed to a jaw-dropping 20c.
‘I couldn’t not grab things I didn’t need…because they were only 20c,’ she said, unable to resist the steal of a deal.
She wondered if this was a regular occurrence: ‘Is this a common occurrence? Does anyone know about this? 20c rack? Friday night?’
Her video went viral, racking up over 190,000 views, and many former Kmart employees chimed in with their own experiences.

‘I used to work at a Kmart and every Monday night from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm a team member would go around and do all the marking down on random things to $2 or less,’ one former worker confirmed.
‘Yes, I worked at Kmart one summer and always towards 8:00 pm, they would put all the clearance stuff out,’ said another.
But not everyone agreed on the timing or consistency of the markdowns.
‘As a ex-Kmart manager, there’s no timing to it. We just have to mark down stuff to get rid of it. Each store will also price differently,’ said one ex-manager.
‘The markdowns usually happen during new seasons and we need to get rid of old stock from summer. Other times it is random but majority of the time it’s when a new season is starting,’ another shared.
‘It’s random, it’s when we have time to do markdowns which usually is in the mornings or later at night,’ added another worker.
Meanwhile, bargain hunters shared their own lucky finds.
‘I was there randomly and they dropped $1 electronics so I guess if you’re lucky,’ one person commented.
‘I needed a waterproof speaker for my shower one time, went to the checkout at Kmart and it was only 60c,’ another shopper revealed.
‘I found a bag at Kmart for $7. A week later, I found the same bag for 50c and my mum made me buy all eight and she refunded the other bag,’ said one.
Another shopper summed it up perfectly: ‘It’s normally at a random time on a random day from what I have seen. Luck of the draw. It’s always a great day when you are there and they bring that trolley out.’
