Kero Heater

Did you have one of these old kerosene heaters? These convenient and portable heaters were popular back in the day to provide warmth in homes and on camping trips. Some even toasted bread on a fork with it! However, its distinct smell was off-putting to others.

I remember being made to dry my wet hair by leaning over in front of this thing.

It was scary and the smell of Kero was obvious throughout the house.

I was most scared when the thing had to be shifted to a different position. Dad or mum would lift it from behind (while it was on!!) and walk backwards to the new destination. Talk about 'danger, danger'.

My parents in law had one, it didn’t seem to warm much unless you were right on top of it. Could have been that their house was on a farm and got really cold. They had it in their kitchen dining area which was a big room also. They also had an oil stove which ran continuously in winter and between the two it took the chill off the room. The smell took some getting used to.
