A recent space mission has sparked a flurry of online chatter, and it's not just about the science.
When a group of notable women made a brief journey to the edge of space, the reactions were nothing short of explosive.
From dramatic landings to unexpected performances, the mission has become the subject of both admiration and mockery.
Katy Perry made headlines after joining an all-female crew on a brief journey into space, but it wasn’t long before the pop star’s reactions became the subject of ridicule.
On 14 March, Perry took part in a space mission with notable women, including Gayle King, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyễn, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
The mission, aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, reached beyond the Kármán line, marking the internationally recognised boundary of space.
The flight lasted a mere 10 minutes and 21 seconds, per NPR, before making a safe landing back on Earth.
As she stepped out of the rocket’s capsule, Perry posed with a small daisy, a tribute to her 4-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove.
After a brief moment of reflection, the ‘Roar’ singer dramatically knelt and kissed the ground, making a ‘muah’ sound as she did.
Shortly after, King followed suit and kissed the ground herself, making the same theatrical gesture.

Given that the women had been in space for just over 10 minutes, many found Perry’s dramatic reaction a bit over the top.
‘Girl u was gone for 5 seconds
’ a social media user commented.
Another added: ‘Girl you went to see the cloud

your ass didn’t see the space sit down.’
‘Girl 143 was on the charts longer than her trip
’ quipped another user.
‘Girl you didn’t go to Mars chill
,’ one social media post read.
Other memes poked fun at the situation, like one that questioned: ‘What we all thought Katy Perry was going to do in space.’
Some took it a step further, suggesting that Perry wasn’t even the same person who went up in the rocket.
‘Even space didn’t want her,’ one user joked.
‘I’m starting a conspiracy that the Katy Perry who came back from space isn’t the same one who went up,’ said another.
While many were amused by the entire event, some were more critical.
‘If Jeff Bezos can send Katy Perry into space, he can pay a wealth tax so every American has debt-free healthcare,’ wrote one person on social media.
The entire launch, which was marketed as a leap for ladykind, was clearly aimed at promoting Blue Origin’s space tourism venture.
But it raised eyebrows, especially considering that the mission was being compared to the first all-female spaceflight in 1963, when Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova launched alone into space.
In a further nod to the marketing, Gayle King revealed that Perry performed ‘What a Wonderful World’ while in zero gravity.
‘Katy sang, “What a Wonderful World,”’ King said.
‘Isn’t that nice?…We’d been asking her to sing all the time, and she wouldn’t. And she wouldn’t! Everybody said, “Sing ‘Roar,’ sing ‘Firework!’” And she said, “It’s not about me, I wanted to talk about the world.”’
Reactions to the tidbit were mixed, with many questioning if it was worth mentioning given the short duration of the trip.
One user tweeted: ‘Must’ve been a single line since they were there for 5 seconds.’
‘What are we to do with that information?’ another wrote.
Others took to social media to express their frustration with the launch, like one who posted: ‘No one cares Gayle about a few rich women flying to the edge of space while so much is happening on Earth.’
Despite the laughs and criticisms, Perry’s space adventure has certainly left a lasting impression.
