Kate Middleton took a big step away from royal tradition with her move — can you guess what it is?

‘Tradition’ is a word that changes meaning depending on who hears it.

Some think it is a way to honour the ways of old by keeping them alive in today’s modern times where trends shift as easily as the sun shines.

Others think ‘tradition’ is a shackle that binds us unnecessarily to the past, holding us back from paths of advancement and progress.

Of course, the world rarely is a black-and-white place, and there are certainly a thousand more permutations of how people define tradition.

Speaking of old rules, the British monarchy is steeped in it.

A quick search online reveals there are many things to keep in mind in the presence of royals lest one want to appear disrespectful, even unintentionally so,

The same is also true for royals. There are also many things they must follow to uphold all the honour of the monarchy.

But as they say, the only thing constant is change itself, so it’s not quite surprising for old habits to eventually be done away with, as in the case of Kate Middleton, the new Princess of Wales.

You see, Kensington Palace has started to ‘refuse’ giving out details on what Middleton will wear to her public engagements because ‘so much media coverage is focused on what she wears’.

This is a break from the usual for the royal family.

If you recall, in the past, announcements would be made from Buckingham Palace as to what the departed Queen Elizabeth would wear on certain occasions.

But now, Middleton is reportedly moving away and charting her own path by ‘keeping mum’ on all her outfits, with the exception of high-profile gatherings such as visits to nations where she wants to showcase local creations.

Observers have also noticed that Middleton has changed her attire from a younger, more innocent preference for dresses and frocks to serious and mature blazers and trousers.

It remains to be seen though whether this will discourage continued coverage of Middleton’s attire.

Believe it or not, there’s actually a website dedicated to detailing what she wore aptly named What Kate Wore

That’s not all from Middleton.

She and her husband Prince William, Prince of Wales, are also said to be introducing another change to tradition.

This time, it involves royal appearances at marginalised communities.

What they want to happen now is instead of visiting these areas and crossing their fingers that their visit shines light on the place and its inhabitants long enough to inspire help or donations, they will use the days up to their visit as a sort of donation drive.

Once they arrive, they will then announce the funds obtained and disburse it to beneficiaries intended.

This concept has reportedly been done on November 3 when the royal pair launched funding for a youth mental health program in Scarborough, UK.

Here’s to hoping this initiative from them becomes successful!

If you want to know more about how the Prince and Princess of Wales want to ‘modernise’ the royal family, be sure to read this article.

So, what is your reaction? What can you say about the royal pair’s efforts to change the monarchy to be more attuned to modern times?

I’ve always admired Kate. She’s a beautiful, refreshing woman. The monarchy is heading in the right direction with her and William. As much as I loved Queen Elizabeth II, as feisty and upbeat of a lady she was, it’s great to know our future monarchy is in good hands.

Let's hope the nit pickers and bullies leave her to mature in her own way without being critical.
We can have our own thoughts and opinions, but there's no need to be mean.
She is a credit to herself, to her family, and to the Commonwealth.
I think she must be as beautiful inside as she is outside.
