K&A Pappas Continental Milk Bar

Just one photo... but so many memories! The legendary K&A Pappas Continental Milk Bar in West Preston — the shelves packed to the brim, the counter full of treats, and that warm smile of familiar shopkeepers who knew everyone by name. From mixed lollies and cold milk to Metro gum and daily essentials, this place had it all. A true local hub.

Did you grow up near a milk bar like this? What was your go-to treat? Let’s hear your stories below!

Mr Tickies (Mattische) lolly shop and ice cream parlour!!
He would patiently count out your lollies which you ran outside and pointed to what you wanted in the window…
Glass of sarsaparilla for 3 cents…. made into a spider for an extra 2 cents…Sunday treat after church..
Bag of barbecue chips 5 cents…he would shake Worcestershire sauce into the bag for me and many others…free of charge..
Star bar water ice block was 4 cents…my four school friends and I would take it in turns to
“shout” each other every Friday after school.
Sadly Mr. Tickies is long gone!!
