We admit we’re a bit too invested in the story of the New Year’s Eve lotto winners, folks. But only because winning the lottery is such a far-fetched dream, so we’d like to at least live vicariously through the winners!
The last of the missing winners, a woman from Julia Creek in Outback Queensland, finally stepped forward to claim her prize – after 10 days of waiting.

This week, a lucky mystery woman from a small outback town won a whopping $3.3 million lotto prize. We are sure her bank account is looking mighty full today!
Twelve people in total won the Gold Lotto draw prize on December 31, 2022. The winning numbers were: 11, 23, 35, 42, 20, and 45. The supplementary numbers were 8 and 38.
The winning, unregistered lotto ticket was bought from a newsagency in Julia Creek, with the woman coming forward a full 10 days after the lotto numbers were drawn.
However, due to the winner’s request for anonymity, how she plans to enjoy her prize winnings will forever remain a secret.
People had been urged to check lotto tickets they might have purchased during the 10-day search. Matt Hart, a spokesperson from The Lott, said this at the time:
‘We’re in the business of paying prizes, so we’re always keen to unite winners with their windfalls.’
He continued: ‘As people delve into the new year and are tidying up around the home or office, we encourage people to keep an eye out for unchecked lottery tickets.’
The owner of the newsagency, Ellen Warner, shared that their small community was ‘abuzz’ with the announcement.
‘This is by far the largest win in our 38 years of ownership. Certainly, people in town are all asking each other,’ she said.
She added that maybe the reason why the winner took so long to claim her prize was because of the holiday season.
Mr Hart shared that winners had seven years to claim their prizes. ‘We’ve certainly had people come forward months, and even years, after the draw,’ he explained.
Lottery ticket sales and spending on lotteries has been on the rise in recent years, as more Australians are drawn to the excitement of potentially winning a life-changing amount of money.
There appears to be several factors behind the rise in ticket sales, with the convenience of purchasing tickets online and the perception of lottery playing being a ‘fun’ form of entertainment thought to be driving the trend.
But because of the volume of entrants, the odds of winning the standard 6/45 lottery are one in eight million. Fun fact: Did you know one retired couple was able to win over $39 million in lottery prizes? And no, it’s not because of sheer luck. The couple was able to ‘outsmart’ the system.
