'It shocked me’: Princess Michael of Kent speaks out after devastating accident

Accidents can happen anywhere, even in the most secure and prestigious settings.

When they do, the aftermath often leaves lingering questions and challenges for those involved.

Such an incident recently unfolded within the walls of one of Britain’s most iconic residences, leading to unexpected repercussions for a member of the royal family.

Princess Michael of Kent, 79, suffered a serious fall at Kensington Palace, breaking both of her wrists.

The incident occurred as she was descending the stairs of the royal residence she shares with her husband, Prince Michael of Kent, according to reports.

Despite her injuries, the princess attended King Charles’ pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace that same day. She was photographed with both wrists in splints.

‘So many things that you rely on being able to do, like cleaning your teeth, are impossible,’ she shared. ‘I can type with one finger on a mobile, but I can’t use a laptop.’

The fall happened while Princess Michael was carrying several overcoats, which caused her to lose her balance.

In an attempt to break the fall, she used her hands, resulting in multiple small fractures.

‘I am told that, after an accident like this, if you do one wrong movement on top of the unhealed bones, you are back where you started,’ she added.

Born as Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz, Princess Michael adopted her title through marriage. Her husband, Prince Michael, was the late Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin.

The princess appeared in good spirits while recovering, even smiling as she arrived at King Charles’ traditional Christmas lunch.

Recent reports also revealed that Princess Michael underwent heart surgery a year prior. ‘It shocked me. I still have to rest every afternoon,’ she admitted in an interview.

The princess also addressed the tragic loss of her son-in-law, Thomas Kingston, for the first time.

Kingston, who was married to Princess Michael’s daughter, Lady Gabriella Windsor, passed away in February at 45.

The coroner ruled Kingston’s death as suicide.

‘It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Thomas Kingston, our beloved husband, son and brother,’ the family’s statement read.

‘Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to the whole family, and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing.’

Lady Gabriella later shared her thoughts in a witness statement at the Gloucestershire Coroner’s Court.

‘It appears to me Tom’s impulsive action was likely provoked by an adverse reaction to the medication he had been taking in the last two weeks of his life,’ Lady Gabriella said.

She added that Kingston had never shown signs of suicidal thoughts and expressed doubt that work-related stress was a contributing factor.

‘[Work] was certainly a challenge for him over the years, but I highly doubt it would have led him to take his own life, and it seemed much improved,’ she elaborated.

Kingston, a financier and former hostage negotiator, married Lady Gabriella in May 2019. He was also an ex-boyfriend of Pippa Middleton, sister of the Princess of Wales.

My Aunt did this, tripped and broke both her arms when she fell. She was in hospital and at meal time the nurse came a put a tray of food in front of her and walked off !!! she just sat and looked at it until someone finally realized she couldn't feed herself with broken arms.

I have broken two arms at once twice. The first on the Nullarbor and the next riding a push bike. You sure get to know your husband! And yes you just have to get on with it.
