'It really is an end of an era': Aussie media icon (85) passes away days after retirement

The Australian media landscape has lost one of its most enduring and beloved figures.

Radio and TV personality Philip Brady has passed away at 85 years old—just nine days after he announced his retirement from the industry.

Brady's death was a poignant reminder of the golden age of Australian entertainment, which he helped to define.

Philip Brady had an impressive career that spanned over six decades and has touched the lives of countless Australians through radio and television.

While his voice and presence became a staple in many Australian homes, he recently stepped down from his top-rating Melbourne radio show on 3AW.

His departure left fans and listeners with a sense of loss.

The Morning Show entertainment editor, Peter Ford, confirmed his passing in an interview.

Ford also revealed details about Brady's initial decision to retire.

'Philip rang me on 2 December and told me he was dying and had a very short amount of time to live, but he did not want anybody to know—he wanted to do this privately,' Ford stated in an interview.

'And I said, "Why, Philip?" You know, because he did not want his older fans to be distressed and upset.'

According to Ford, Philip Brady was a man of deep Catholic faith.

With it, he meticulously planned for his passing and ensured that everything was in order.

'He had meetings with his priest to organise his funeral,' Ford added.

'One thing that Brady had to get done before he could really fully accept that he was dying he had to find a home for his dog, and he did that.'

'For the last couple of weeks, he's been in palliative care,' Ford further shared.

Brady appeared in over 3000 episodes of In Melbourne Tonight, where he shared the spotlight with another legendary broadcaster, Graham Kennedy.

His career was a bridge between the early days of Australian television and the modern era, which made him a unique figure in the industry.

'It really is the end of an era because Philip was the last of the old original brigade of TV stars still working,' Ford quipped.

'So, although he was the butt of the jokes with Don Lane and with Graham, you know, and Bert Newton, he was the one who had the last laugh. He worked longer than all of them.'

Peter Ford praised Philip Brady for being a consummate professional, a gentleman of the media, and a figure who commanded respect and admiration from his peers and the public.

So very sad. Deepest condolences to his family. What an honorable man putting those, before him, being his elderly friends and loved dog. He was such a great man always with a quick wit and sense of humour in the australian way. He will be very sadly missed. I do hope who ever took his dog extends kindness & understanding as he/she will be grieving too
