It looked like a lovely rental...until they saw the bathroom ceiling

A traveller thought a few warning signs were the worst it could get—until they looked up in the shower.

What they saw left the internet both horrified and in stitches.

Would you still bathe in peace with strangers potentially peeking in?

While on holiday, one guest decided to book a short-term rental online—only to discover their bathroom offered a little more exposure than expected.

They took to social media to share a photo from their stay, writing: ‘Booked an Airbnb for vacation. This is the view from the shower.’

The image showed a ceiling window in the shower looking directly into a neighbouring unit, with no curtain or screen to protect the guest’s privacy.

‘There is no way to cover it up,’ the traveller added.

While they didn’t share the location of the rental or confirm if it was indeed booked through Airbnb, the post quickly sparked a flood of reactions.

‘I was confused for a sec because I thought it was just a nice skylight window. Then I took a second look,’ one person commented.

‘I bet that’s where the owner lives,’ another joked.

Others tried to help with creative suggestions: ‘Let the shower run on the hottest for 30min before you hop in, is the least destructive idea I have offer.’

‘Nah, umbrella perched on top of the shower rail to block the view from above,’ another wrote.

Some readers were disturbed, but others shared similar experiences—proving it might be more common than many assume.

‘Lmaooo! Literally me. I stayed in an apartment just like this in Mexico City and I was so paranoid. I attempted to make a towel roof,’ one person replied.

Another added: ‘I had a similar experience in San Francisco but the window overlooked a hallway. I didn’t even notice until I was done.’

Others reassured that despite the unnerving setup, it was unlikely anyone could actually see anything in detail.

‘Typically those are extremely tinted and it looks like it is, my old apartment had one like this and it was pretty completely black, they likely don’t even know it’s a window,’ one user explained.

‘While it’s a very odd design choice, I feel like no one would really see anything from that angle. At most they’d see your head and shoulders (which isn’t okay either) but everything underneath is probably covered by the curtain. Unless someone is the height of that window/door, I’d wager below clavicle is safe from view. Still, it’s terrible layout,’ another person added.

Airbnb was contacted for comment but they were unable to confirm whether the booking was made through their platform.

If you thought a shower with a questionable view was unsettling, wait until you hear what happened when a house party got wildly out of hand.

Sometimes, it’s not the design of the rental that’s the problem—it’s what people decide to do with it.

In another bizarre rental mishap, a short-term stay was left in ruins after an unexpected guest list exploded into the hundreds.
