It’s been nearly a year since he burned a baby—why hasn’t he been caught?

Content warning: This story contains details of a violent incident involving a child.

A quiet day at a Brisbane park turned into a scene of horror after an unprovoked attack left a young family traumatised.

What began as a peaceful moment in a public space soon spiralled into a case that has gripped investigators for nearly a year.

Now, police have provided a fresh update as the international manhunt continues.

A horrifying incident in a Brisbane park nearly a year ago continues to haunt investigators and the public alike, with police confirming the search for the person responsible remains active.

The attack, which involved a baby boy being doused with scalding coffee during a picnic, shocked the community and triggered an urgent manhunt that has since gone international.

As of today, Queensland Police have reaffirmed their commitment to solving the case and bringing the suspect to justice—though they remained tight-lipped on certain aspects of the investigation.

The assault took place at Hanlon Park in Stones Corner around midday on 27 August 2024. A man allegedly approached the child and his mother before pouring hot coffee over the baby, who was just nine months old at the time. The injuries were severe.

The child suffered burns to his face, chest, arms and legs, and underwent four surgeries to treat the damage.

Queensland Police Service Acting Commissioner Shane Chelepy spoke on the matter during an interview with Peter Fegan, making it clear that police had not moved on from the case.

‘This was a horrible incident that happened almost a year ago, it struck our investigators pretty hard,’ Chelepy said.

‘I give credit to those investigators, they're still working very hard on this, this isn't something we've parked in the corner, this is a very serious offence, and they're working hard on it.’

He added that a number of investigative strategies were still in play and would remain active as the search continued.

‘What I can say is we're still working with our international partners to progress this matter, and to get a resolution here,’ he said.

‘There are a range of investigative strategies under way, and we're going to keep these strategies at play.’

Although the baby cannot be named under Queensland law due to being a child victim of crime, police did share more images of the suspect through social media in an attempt to generate new leads.

The man allegedly fled the country following the attack, and while a Chinese media outlet has named him, Queensland Police have not confirmed the identity publicly.

When pressed on whether investigators were operating or had recently been in China, Chelepy said, ‘I don't want to compromise their investigative strategy.’

He did, however, respond firmly when asked if the operation was still active.
‘Absolutely,’ he said.

Despite the time that has passed, authorities remain focused on the case—refusing to let it fade into obscurity. With international partners now involved and more details emerging overseas, investigators continue working behind the scenes to bring the perpetrator to justice.
