Is your kitchen a total disaster? You could be guilty of these seven common mistakes!

Ah, the heart of the home, the culinary kingdom, the epicentre of nourishment and merriment - our kitchens. It's where we gather around the table to share in the bounty of life, to laugh and love and make memories that will last a lifetime.

And yet, how often do we find ourselves cursing the chaos that reigns within? A cluttered countertop, a dishevelled cupboard, a sink overflowing with dirty dishes - these are but a few of the curses that can befall the unwary homeowner.

Unfortunately, whether we’re aware of it or not, there are certain things many of us do that can contribute to the chaos in our home kitchens.

But why does it feel like no matter how much we clean, our kitchen never looks in order? We’ve done some digging and have come up with seven things that could be making your kitchen feel like a total disaster zone.

1. Turning your fridge into a clipboard - It’s easy to think that our fridges make a great noticeboard – a place to post reminders and happy memorabilia. But this can easily make our kitchens look cluttered and messy.

The best thing to do is to pick a few of your favourite memories and pop them up on a wall that’s easily visible, rather than on the fridge. Anything else (such as lists of to-dos or reminders) can go in a designated spot not far from the kitchen, preferably a spot near your desk or work area.

2. Not enough lighting - When it comes to creating a bright and airy-looking kitchen, lighting is key – and not just one light in the middle of the ceiling either!

You might think about adding a few downlights or strip lights around the perimeter of the space. Extra lights could also be a great feature in particular cabinets, drawers or over the island, where you usually do your food preparation.

3. Too many open shelves - A growing trend in home aesthetics, open shelves might seem like a stylish idea. However, they can be hard to maintain and keep organised.

If you’ve got your eye on open shelves as part of your kitchen’s design scheme, just remember to be conscious about how you’re organising them (e.g. sticking to a theme, not overfilling them) and what you’re displaying on them at any given time.

4. Overcrowded benches - It’s easy to clutter up benches with cookbooks, ingredients, and appliances. But the key to a mess-free workspace is having adequate kitchen storage that allows you to give everything its own place. It will instantly change the feel of your kitchen when you’re done – trust us!

5. Dirty sponges and soap bottles in sight - Your kitchen sponge is one of the dirtiest items in your home, so why leave it hanging around on the counters or sink? Similarly, soap bottles can be unpleasant to see in the kitchen

So, how can we fix this? Well, all you need to do is to keep these items in a cupboard dedicated to cleaning products.

6. Too many cords - If you’ve got multiple appliances on your counters, cords could be causing extra mess and clutter. Do yourself a favour and invest in some cord storage tools that will help to get the mess under control.

7. Dirty dishes in the sink - Dirty dishes piling up in the sink make the kitchen look and feel messier because, well, it is messier! So, commit to spending a few minutes each day doing the dishes. Remember, it won’t take nearly as long as you think it will.

I hate clutter!!
None of the above kitchen mistakes are part of my habits!!
I just don’t understand why should we use such an amount of lights around the kitchen……………first electricity is dear and second it makes the place too hot!!

My pet hate is covering your beautiful fridge with magnets and bills, it adds instant mess to a lovely kitchen, use a clever storage inside the cupboard door and let your fridge be the beautiful item that it is.D5DF30BA-6EC6-444D-89C8-A3135160E364.jpeg

It's my pet hate, too. My family knows never to give me fridge magnets. 😊
