Is your fabric conditioner putting you at risk? The Laundress recalls 16 products

We always aim to keep our community informed of any potential risks, especially when it comes to the products we use in our day-to-day lives. Recently, our attention has been drawn to a significant product recall by the ‘luxury detergent and fabric care’ brand, The Laundress.
Unfortunately, this calls for an urgent update that all our members should be aware of as it involves a potentially dangerous chemical.
According to Product Safety Australia (PSA), 16 cleaning products have been determined to contain ethylene oxide, a hazardous carcinogen.
PSA has warned that continued exposure to this chemical can lead to long-term health issues, including cancer.
‘Ethylene oxide is a carcinogen…Direct long-term exposure may cause adverse health effects, including cancer,’ the PSA declared.
Ethylene oxide was detected in a variety of cleaning products sold by The Laundress, both nationally and internationally.
The hazardous chemical's presence in such products poses a significant risk, as consumers may encounter it either in residue on clothing or through inhalation while using the product.
This comes after The Laundress’ announcement last November 2022, where it posted a warning on its social media page urging customers to stop using all products in their possessions.
Since then, the brand has been proactive in urging customers to halt using their products and issued an initial recall in December 2022 in collaboration with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Further investigations uncovered that even more fabric conditioners may contain ethylene oxide.
The company made the decision to cease operations and focus on re-launching its product line with a renewed commitment to safety and quality through an Instagram post.
The Laundress reassured its customers, saying, ‘As we prepare for our comeback, we are confident that the procedures we have put in place embody our uncompromising commitment to you and will exceed your expectations for exceptional fabric care.’
PSA has requested consumers ‘immediately stop using the recalled fabric conditioners’ and to get in touch with The Laundress for a full refund.
They also added that consumers who have already initiated a refund request in response to The Laundress’ December 2022 recall announcement should not submit a new one.
Instead, customers should safely dispose of the product by tightly sealing the bottle and placing it in their household bin. PSA advises against emptying the product before disposal to avoid the release of harmful chemicals.
‘We again deeply apologise for this situation and look forward to returning soon with a renewed commitment to the highest standards of product safety and quality,’ The Laundress said in a statement posted on their website.
The products in question were available for sale between January 1, 2021, and March 31, 2023.
We urge you, therefore, to take a good look at the list of products shown below and, if you do find the item you're using, discontinue use and contact the company for a refund.
