Whether generously spread on toast or delicately layered in sandwiches, Vegemite holds a special place in our hearts (and stomachs). It's a culinary tradition that proud Aussies hold near and dear.

Many of us here have witnessed Vegemite's journey throughout the years; that’s why it's only natural for us to ponder the impact of these rising costs. After all, Vegemite has been a constant companion during our morning rituals and afternoon tea breaks, providing us with that distinct savoury kick we've come to crave.

Today, we're diving into the intriguing world of Vegemite prices. Don't worry; we've got Angus Kidman from Finder on our side, armed with his trusty collection of supermarket pricing data. Together, we'll uncover the fascinating tale of how our beloved toast topper's price has evolved over the years, starting from 2017.

Now, some may wonder, why ‘Vegemite’ of all supermarket staples? Well, not only is it a quintessential Australian icon, but it's also a favourite across generations, something that Aussies are always willing to shell out for.

It's a household name that continues to hold a special place in our hearts – and grocery lists, of course.

Moreover, major supermarket chains such as Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI all stock Vegemite, providing us with a fascinating comparison of prices over the years.

And for those who may be curious about whether the change in Vegemite ownership from Kraft to Bega in 2017 had a lasting impact on pricing, don’t worry. Mr Kidman is here to provide some much-needed insight.

Analysing Vegemite prices: ALDI, Coles, and Woolworths

Indeed, there are various Vegemite options available at supermarkets today – regular, low-salt, gluten-free, squeezy, and cheesy – but for the sake of simplicity, let's focus our attention on the timeless classic: the original Vegemite spread.

Now, when it comes to Coles and Woolworths, they both offer three sizes of Vegemite: 150 grams, 380 grams, and 560 grams. As one might expect, the larger jars come with a more favourable unit price, giving you more bang for your buck (or, rather, toast).

So, let's dive right in and explore the pricing journey of a 560-gram jar of Vegemite at Coles and Woolworths over the years 2017, 2020, and 2023.

As we examine the data provided, an interesting pattern emerges. Between the years 2017 and 2020, Vegemite prices remained the same, showing no significant change. However, a closer look reveals that between 2020 and 2023, there was a noticeable increase of 12.5% in Vegemite prices.

Now, one might initially see this as quite a significant jump. However, when considering the broader context of longer-term inflation, this increase is actually somewhat modest.

If we turn to the Reserve Bank of Australia's inflation calculator, it shows us some valuable insights. According to their calculations, an $8 purchase in 2017 would amount to $9.16 at the end of 2022, factoring in the effects of inflation over time. Hence, when we encounter a $9 price tag for Vegemite in 2023, it becomes apparent that it could have been worse.

But what about everyone's favourite bargain store, ALDI? Unlike Coles and Woolworths, ALDI has always sold a single size of Vegemite, which was never available elsewhere. Until recently, in 2017 and 2020, ALDI sold a 455-gram jar of Vegemite. However, in 2023, ALDI switched to a 370-gram jar priced at $6.49.

So, for comparison purposes, it's worth examining the unit price only.

If we compare the unit pricing, we find that ALDI's Vegemite prices have actually been consistently higher than both Coles and Woolworths.

In 2017, ALDI's Vegemite unit price ($1.54) was notably higher than Coles and Woolworths ($1.43). While ALDI matched their competitors' pricing by 2020, in 2023, their unit price ($1.75) remains slightly more expensive than Coles and Woolworths' best option ($1.61).

If you're looking to buy Vegemite at the best value, it's worth opting for a bigger jar. In 2023, the 560g jar of Vegemite at Coles and Woolworths has a unit price of $1.61, making it the cheapest option per 100 grams.

If you don't need that much Vegemite, the 380g jar has a slightly higher unit price of $1.84, but it is still a good option. However, it's worth noting that ALDI now sells a 370g jar of Vegemite for $6.49, with a unit price of $1.75.

For those who prefer the convenience of a squeezy bottle, the 350g and 200g options have a unit price of $2.00. But if you want to save some money, consider going for the larger 560g jar instead.

And if you're really looking to splurge, the most expensive option is the 150g jar with a unit price of $2.53. So, it's always best to check the unit prices before making a purchase.

Key Takeaways

  • Vegemite, the beloved Australian spread, has seen minor price fluctuations over the years.
  • While Coles and Woolworths have maintained consistent prices for their 560g jars of Vegemite, ALDI now offers a smaller 370g jar at a slightly higher unit price.
  • It's advisable to choose larger jars for better value, and for those looking to save, the 150g jar remains the most expensive option per unit, so you might want to avoid it.

We hope you found this analysis of Vegemite's pricing evolution over the years informative and interesting! As one of Australia's most beloved and iconic food products, it's fascinating to see how its cost has changed over time.

Whether you're a die-hard Vegemite fan or just curious about supermarket pricing, it's always worth keeping an eye on the unit prices of your favourite products to make sure you're getting the best deal.

How odd that inflation always seems to be the reason why prices SHOULD jump, when in fact it is the price increases that CAUSE inflation.

Who owns Bega, the people who sell the Vegemite to the overpriced supermarkets? Simple; Vegemite is not a necessary part of one's diet. Just stop buying it. It's only salt and dead yeast, just like Marmite, which was a by-product of the British beer-brewing industry that someone learned how to sell.

So the price of a 560 g jar of vegemite has been increased by $1.00 over the 5 years from 2017 to 2023 and that is a problem?

It would also be interesting to know what the price was during the 10 years prior to 2017!

My partner loves his vegemite sandwiches, but the amount he uses is so minscule that a jar lasts forever.
