Is this the worst $31 pub meal salad ever? Australians can't believe their eyes!

As Australians, we cherish our pub culture – the camaraderie, the atmosphere, and of course, the classic pub grub. From a succulent schnitzel to a hearty pie, we expect our meals to be both satisfying and good value for money. But what happens when one of the elements on the plate doesn't quite live up to expectations?

This was the conundrum faced by a patron of the Hawthorne Hotel in Melbourne's bustling inner-city suburb. The customer was left bewildered when presented with what she described as the 'most pathetic' house salad to accompany her $31 chicken parmigiana. Taking to social media, she shared her dismay, alongside a photo of the offending salad, questioning the pub's decision-making with a simple, 'What are you thinking?'

The salad in question? A sparse arrangement of large lettuce leaves and a smattering of onion strands, which sparked a debate among Aussies online. The culinary controversy quickly unfolded as hundreds weighed in on whether this salad was a passable side or a disappointing afterthought.

Some defended the pub, arguing that the salad is merely a sidekick to the main event – the parmi and chips – and not the star of the show. They claimed that the salad is often overlooked and left uneaten, with one person even praising the simplicity of the green salad, and another expressing contentment with the offering, saying, 'It's a garnish basically, you got chips and a parmi, they're the important bits.'

However, others sided with the original poster, sharing their own experiences of underwhelming salads at the same venue. One diner echoed the sentiment, calling the salad a 'shameful' addition to their meal. The minimalist approach to the salad was met with harsher criticism by some, with one person humorously comparing the onion garnish to worms and another quipping, 'If I wanted lettuce I would have just gone to Woolworths.'

The Hawthorne Hotel has been contacted for a response, but the story raises a broader question about what we, as customers, expect from our dining experiences. Is it fair to demand a certain standard for every component of our meal, or should we adjust our expectations based on the primary focus of the dish?

At the Seniors Discount Club, we understand that value for money is paramount, especially when dining out is a treat rather than a daily occurrence. We also know that a well-rounded meal contributes to our overall enjoyment and satisfaction. So, let's talk about it – what do you think constitutes a good pub salad? Is it the variety of ingredients, the dressing, the portion size, or something else entirely?

We invite you to share your thoughts and experiences. Have you ever been served a side dish that left you wanting more, or perhaps you've been pleasantly surprised by an exceptional salad at your local watering hole? Let us know in the comments below!

  • The salad, which consisted of just a few large lettuce leaves and some strings of onion, sparked debate among Aussies online, with opinions divided.

Why not let the customer choose when ordering if they wish a side salad or not. Most places have a notation somewhere on the menu that a side salad (or whatever) is an extra, or side salad not included. I always ask what does the side salad have in it. It's a real hard fix - come on people use your brain or do you still need mummy to hold your hand to go to the toilet.

🤣🤣🤣

If this is the salad that typically comes with the main meal, I would wonder what the meal cost would be without the salad. If the answer is that it wouldn't make any difference to the cost, then I would opt not to have the salad because it would be a waste. If there is a cost and the difference in cost of the meal with a salad versus one without the salad was substantial, then opt for a meal without the salad. If I want salad, then I would order a salad on its own.

That would suit me just fine. I never eat the tomato or cucumber when I get a salad so I would be more than happy with lettuce and onion (if there happens to be capsicum too - bonus)

here we go again, happy as can be, BUT must have a grizzle instead of complaining to the right quarter.
OH! please will these grizzlers just shut up. I do not bloody care what you have to pay.

Can't see the salad for the face in the road - thought this was about the cost of the salad not look how beautiful I am! Having said that, no pub meal is worth $31. Bring back the old pub counter meals.

Why go to a pub to eat when there are still clubs around that do 'All you can eat' for $42.00. That way you get to chose whether you want to have salad or not and what salad you want.

Not long ago I ordered a meal at an asian restaurant in Griffith.I did not order it as take away but that is how it came to me .It was some stewed meat in a sauce that appeared to be thickened water with brown colouring. The presentation was that of dog food. There was one table of eight, The waitress brought out one meal at a time. I don't know any locals who like the place. I don't know how the place stays in business.
