Is Australia the most expensive country in the world? American expat is SHOCKED by price of alcohol Down Under

When we travel to other countries, we often experience culture shock. This can be due to a number of factors, including the language barrier, the different customs, and the different infrastructure that may confuse us as we navigate our way around this new place.

One of the most shocking things for many visitors to other countries is the price of goods and services. Depending on the country, prices can be much higher or lower than we are used to.

We Aussies are so used to the high prices of our everyday goods that we don't even bat an eyelid when visitors from other countries express their shock at how much things cost here.

That's why when a young American expat made the rounds on social media for her reaction to the prices of alcoholic products here Down Under, many Australians laughed it off.

In a recent TikTok video, Tate Duane, a 22-year-old California native who now calls Melbourne home, expressed her dismay at the 'brutal' cost of a 750mL bottle of liquor, revealing that she spent over $60 for a bottle of tequila and margarita mix and claiming that the items were the 'cheapest' she could find.

Tate says in the video: 'It's my first night out in the city and alcohol is expensive, tell me why it was literally 50 bucks for not even a "fifth" like it's small.'

For those of you who are wondering what a 'fifth' means, it is basically a standard unit of measurement for alcoholic beverages in America, denoting one-fifth of a gallon, or slightly more than 750mL.

The clip has captured the attention of more than 112,000 users, with many Australians commenting that Tate should get used to paying a premium price for alcohol while living in the country.

One person wrote: 'Welcome to Aus! It's expensive haha.'

'Why do you think teenagers go for goon bags? Alcohol is expensive,' another joked.

Others tried to explain the situation in the country and why alcohol is currently being retailed at such a high price.

One user claimed: 'Inflation. Everything is really expensive at the moment. We are on the cusp of a recession.'

Some offered suggestions on how to score a 'less expensive' bottle of alcoholic drink.

'Aussie that lived in the US here! In Australia, you need to switch from spirits to wine. Getting award-winning wine from Aldi is fail-safe,' one person recommended.

Others have claimed that the 'eye-watering' high cost of alcohol Down Under in comparison to other nations is due to greater alcohol taxes.

One person explained: 'Australia taxes alcohol & cigarettes big time to discourage it. Especially for young people.'

'They keep putting taxes on it. It just went up recently,' another said.

According to a recent survey by Bloomberg, Australia is the third-most expensive country in the world to purchase drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes.

Japan has the highest average retail prices for goods like alcohol, cigarettes and illegal substances, with New Zealand and Australia close behind.

Sure, living in Australia isn't cheap, but that's because we enjoy a high standard of living. And while the cost of living might be a bit of a shock to visitors from other countries, we think it's generally well worth it. After all, where else would you rather be than in one of the most beautiful countries in the world?

We want to hear from you! As an Aussie, do you think the price of alcohol is justified? Or is it way too expensive? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

If the high taxes on alcohol is designed to reduce consumption by younger people I think that if that's the case adults over say 75 should have an exemption of duty on alcohol as we are of an age where we can drink sensibly

It’s way too expensive and I don’t believe for one moment it’s to discourage young people from drinking it’s a greedy government tax grab.

Seeing as the campaign to stop people smoking has worked so well the Government lost a huge revenue source. This shortfall has to be made up somewhere so along comes Alcohol. The Government can use this as a double edged sword as they did with cigarettes, telling the masses that it's for their own good as it is aimed at discouraging excess drinking and is therefore a health measure.

Not sure if you’re saying alcohol is a household staple?
Not in my house- definitely a luxury item especially something like tequila!!

I couldn’t give a rats how much they charge for luxuries like alcohol & cigarettes!! Let those who want to indulge in consuming these ultra-unhealthy, non-essentials pay top dollar & high taxes & perhaps as a pay off the govt could lower the taxes on essentials like good, wholesome heathy food (NOT convenience highly processed garbage & take aways ) , medications (for those who are struggling to pay their bills & buy these often life essentials ), electricity & other utilities!! If the alcohol was too expensive for her then she shouldn’t have bought it…stop whinging honey, try living on $920 per fortnight!! Or go back to America!

I don’t drink so it doesn’t bother me. Personally I would rather tobacco products and alcohol increased in price rather than the food we put on our plates. Drinking and smoking is a personal choice but everyone has to eat.

Not just alcohol also cigarettes, petrol, basic food, rent, gas, electricity, oil, coal, etc, etc...
It seems like Australia is subsidising the rest of the world now ...
