Is Australia ready to ditch Union Jack? Bold move that could redesign national flag forever!

The Australian flag, a symbol of national identity that has flown over the country since 1901, may be due for a historic transformation.

The current design, which features the Union Jack in the canton, has been a point of contention for many Australians who feel it must adequately represent the nation's unique identity and diverse heritage.

A bold new push for a flag redesign that removes the Union Jack and incorporates elements that better reflect Australia's cultural landscape has reignited the debate.

The conversation around the flag's redesign gained momentum following comments from Peter Dutton.

He stated he would only stand in front of the national flag of Australia, excluding the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has displayed these flags alongside the Australian flag at press conferences since he took office in 2022.

The proposed redesign, circulating on social media platforms like Reddit, suggests replacing the Union Jack with the Aboriginal flag while maintaining the Southern Cross as a nod to the current flag's design.

This concept isn't entirely new; it was notably featured on actor Sam Neill's arm in the 1997 sci-fi film Event Horizon.

However, the design has been met with mixed reactions.

Some critics argue that it lacks aesthetic balance and does not respect the significance of the Aboriginal flag, which many believe should not be relegated to a corner of the national flag.

The creator of the Aboriginal flag has expressed that they do not want it to be used in the canton, as this placement traditionally represents control and dominion.

Prominent Australian writer Peter FitzSimons, a vocal advocate for the flag's redesign, has been pushing for a change that better tells Australia's story.

FitzSimons, a director of Ausflag, an organisation dedicated to finding a new flag design, has collected public submissions since 2015.

The group's mission is to create a flag representing Australia's past, present, and future, as well as its land, people, diversity, achievements, and aspirations.

Many designs have been proposed. Some featured iconic Australian symbols like the kangaroo, the federation star, and the nation's sporting colours of green and gold, inspired by the blooming wattle.

Some popular designs include the Southern Cross, which has a federation star above green and gold stripes, and another with a green and gold boomerang through the centre.

FitzSimons has pointed out that changing the national flag is a matter of political will rather than cost and has compared the process to the movement for an Australian republic, which seeks to replace the British monarch with an Australian as head of state.

The current flag, officially adopted in 1953, was chosen upon the federation of the six British colonies into a nation in 1901.

Its design reflects Australia's historical ties to Britain, but as the nation's identity continues to evolve, so does the call for a flag that fully embodies the spirit of modern Australia.

As the debate continues, it's clear that the Australian flag is more than just a piece of fabric; it's a powerful symbol of national unity and pride.

Whether or not the flag will change remains to be seen.

Still, the discussion is a testament to the country's journey towards self-definition and recognition of its rich cultural tapestry.

Get rid of Albanese & also that idiot Fitzsimmons & leave our Flag alone. I'm sure that's what all true blue Aussies would prefer.

This flag is our national flag, it represents all our pride in our country, all the people that have built this country to what it is today, the likes of Peter Fitzsimmons who wants to destroy the history , someone like him who has done nothing to make Australia a better place, he just wants to tear it down and forget all the men and women who fought for our freedom and replace their legacy with something that doesn’t honour their efforts, time to show some patriotism to our beautiful country and honour our national heritage and fly our flag with pride ❤️🇦🇺❤️

What is this ridiculous word "woke", isn't that what the kiddies who think they have brains use?
It looks stupid coming from a 60+ person, I don't even get what it means.
To me it's "When I woke up this morning I had a headache" or "I woke up and you weren't here" etc.
Stop using it, it doesn't make you look or sound smart, it looks, sounds silly!
Now bring on the hate 😂

Yep, I know exactly where you’re coming from! You won’t get any hate from me on that topic! 👍🏻❤️ I roll my eyes up 🙄when I read “woke” used in the silly context that seems to be so popular with some. Then I just move on.

Well said ,my family fought under our flag in both world wars as all our service men and women have and a big mouth like Fitzsimmons needs to crawl back in his hole as we Aussies voted to keep our flag as is ,it’s time for the nasty woke brigade to shut up and disappear ,time to stand up and be heard , ONE FLAG ONE COUNTRY.

Well here we go again!...trying to change history to suit a minority...the main reason to appease the indigenous who continue to play victim 200 yrs later! I am NOT sorry, I am AUSTRALIAN and I am proud of it!
Go Lisa

Do woke people like Peter Fitzsimmons realise that many Australians have died fighting for our freedom under this flag. KEEP YOUR PATHETIC HANDS OFF IT as you are undeserving. I as veteran say too these woke idiots, F^&K OFF to somewhere else, perhaps China, North Korea or some other Godforsaken country and try to change their flag and see how long you last. Bloody dimwits of the highest order IMHO.

Yes as others have said here we go again. Leave it they way it is, people have fought and died for this flag. The indigenous have their own flag, lets leave the two flags very alone. its no problem to fly two flags.

WOKE!

The dumbest word invented since the term "multiculturalism".

I just looked it up, it means "aware", so why not use that instead, some people here are using it way out of context, I don't even think they know what it means and think it looks cool, think again, it doesn't 😂

Way past time Australia grew up. Just take the union jack out. The southern cross represents all Australians.
Australia is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The Union Jack clearly shows our ties with other countries. Keep the flag as it is.

The Southern Cross is not unique to Australia. It appears in the skies of all countries which happen to be south of the equator. We can never be identified solely by the Southern Cross!

Same can be said of the flags that depict the sun.

Japan, Argentina, Nepal, Mongolia, Uruguay, Philippines and Bangladesh to name a few.

The term BRITISH was dropped from the name in 1949 according to The London Declaration (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Declaration)
It is now The Commonwealth of Nations.

I think there are about 56 member nations and only about 17 of those have the Union Jack included in their flag.
