We all know how difficult it can be to make practical design decisions for our homes—especially when trendy new designs hit the market constantly.
But when it comes to furnishing, interior designer Loren Kreiss warned that some of the most popular trends may do more harm than good.
Loren, who specialises in sustainable design, recently shared his top tips for what not to put in your home.
His list covers some of people's top bold choices—and his practical advice will have you thinking twice before committing to this year's latest trends.
White kitchen cabinets
Loren said that he would never suggest white kitchen cabinets to any of his clients.
Despite being a top choice among homeowners, Loren argued that white kitchen cabinets look ‘sterile, lifeless and basic’.
He added that if it doesn't work in your home, it could cost big bucks to replace.
'If I suggested them to a client they'd punch me in the face and I'd deserve it,' he joked. Instead, Loren shared different countertop and cabinet combinations that would look better in your kitchen.
Leather furniture
Leather furniture is often touted as a lifespan investment, and while it may look beautiful and be a fantastic addition to any home, it does have some downsides.
'[Leather] gets too hot in the summers, too cold in the winters,' Loren pointed out. 'They are expensive and, most of the time, just plain ugly.'
Loren didn’t specify a better alternative to leather furniture. However, there are available options that are also sustainable, including leather-like byproducts of coconut and apple harvesting or even recycled rubber.
Designer dupes
Loren described dupes and knockoffs as the 'terrible wedding cover band' of interior design. Many designer furniture pieces have been copied and reproduced repeatedly, and according to Loren, it's not worth the stress.
‘Why would you want something fake that steals someone else's idea?’ He asked.
Loren suggested that home stylists can find original or genuine pieces suitable for any budget from local businesses, secondhand stores, or online marketplaces instead of buying knock-offs.
