Inspirational story: How one woman transformed her life after her devastating cancer diagnosis
When life throws you lemons, it can be hard to find the motivation to get back on your feet.
But with a little bit of determination and some hard work, anything is possible, as we've just seen proved by one remarkable Aussie!
Recently, a woman named Michelle Tilley shared how she regained control of her health after being diagnosed with melanoma.
Before her skin cancer diagnosis, Michelle said she was always on the heavier side. She described herself as an 'overeater'.
‘I was a smoke and coffee girl for breakfast, (I’d) have lunch and then snack a lot in the afternoon,’ she said.
She added that even though she ate the right foods, she would overload her plate with them. She also found ‘every excuse’ to avoid exercise. Her weight reached 147kg. But, despite all these, she never had diabetes or issues with cholesterol.
Her diagnosis came in 2020, and she had to fly to Perth for treatment because there were no specialists in her area.
‘I didn’t fit in those plane seats,’ she narrated. ‘I used to have to ask for extenders. And I’d get quite stressed out about filling nearly two seats.’
Michelle claimed that the cancer diagnosis made her realise that she wasn’t living her life and that life was too short.
'I live in an area that’s camping and fishing, and we love our fishing, and I couldn’t even get myself into the boat. I was rolling into the boat because I couldn’t step into the boat. I just wanted to live.'
Michelle had tried Weight Watchers previously, but unfortunately, she found it difficult.
So, she began researching other weight loss methods when she came across SuperFastDiet, a lifestyle coaching and intermittent diet program.
‘We get an email each week that teaches you about exercise, what foods to eat, what calories to be on, and different things like that,’ Michelle explained.
The program worked like a 'miracle pill', and the weight began dropping off quickly. Michelle started small, with her coaches from the program telling her to walk ten minutes down her street and 10 minutes back for 20 minutes at a time.
From walking, she eventually built up to running full marathons and has lost 65 kg over the past two years.
‘I got to a point where I actually got on an aeroplane, didn’t have to ask for the extender and was able to put the tray down without my tummy in the way,’ she expressed.
Michelle also shared that when she had a bad day, she would turn to a group on social media for support and advice.
‘There’s also a Facebook community, so it was other women across Australia that were going through the exact same thing as you,’ she stated.
Michelle mentioned that she enjoyed the program because it was about balance, not restriction. She can still enjoy a pizza and beer once in a while, as long as she lives a healthy lifestyle.
More than the physical shift, she also added that she had a mental shift after the program.
To celebrate her amazing transformation, she took the goal she made on her vision board (to climb the Harbour Bridge in Sydney) and made it a reality.
Here at the Seniors Discount Club, we want to congratulate Michelle on her dedication and hard work. What a wonderful example she has set for us all of what can be achieved when you put your mind to it.
