Inside the emergency department: Ben Fordham shares harrowing photos from Blacktown Hospital

It’s a scene that no Australian should ever have to witness—let alone experience firsthand.

Yet, shocking new photos from Blacktown Hospital’s emergency department have brought the harsh reality of our overstretched public health system into the spotlight, leaving many of us asking: how did it come to this?

The images, shared with 2GB’s Ben Fordham, show elderly patients in visible agony, forced to lie on the cold, hard vinyl floor of the hospital’s waiting room for hours—sometimes even a full day—while desperately waiting for a bed.

One of the most distressing stories is that of Raymond, a 70-year-old man who arrived at Blacktown Hospital on a Saturday, suffering from severe diarrhoea and dangerously low haemoglobin levels—a situation that could quickly become life-threatening.

Despite the urgency of his condition, Raymond spent a staggering 24 hours waiting for a bed. Much of that time, he was left to try and sleep on the hospital floor, wracked with pain and discomfort.

Raymond’s daughter, Hayley, shared a heartbreaking photo of her father’s ordeal with Ben Fordham, hoping to draw attention to the dire situation.

She also provided a second photo of another elderly man, aged 80, similarly forced to sleep on the floor, covered only by a thin blanket, after waiting at least 12 hours for a bed.

To add insult to injury, Raymond was told by hospital staff that he couldn’t sleep on the floor near reception.

Hayley’s frustration was palpable. ‘What do you expect a 70-year-old to do?’ she asked Fordham.

During the ordeal, Raymond called his daughter multiple times, desperate to leave. ‘He said he’d rather go to a small country town, which is where he’s from, because the wait times aren’t as bad,’ Hayley explained.

These stories are not isolated incidents. According to the latest NSW Health data, only 41 per cent of emergency department patients at Blacktown Hospital are being treated on time.

The hospital ranks dead last—20th out of 20—in its category for emergency department presentations. For a facility serving one of Sydney’s fastest-growing regions, these numbers are deeply concerning.

Opposition health spokeswoman Kellie Sloane expressed her sadness and frustration at the situation: ‘This shouldn’t be happening in our hospitals. I’m terribly sad for this gentleman and his family, decent people who have paid taxes their entire lives. And when they’re at their most vulnerable, the system has let them down.’

Blacktown Hospital’s woes are not new. Almost a year ago, NSW Premier Chris Minns singled out the hospital as a symbol of the state’s overstretched public hospital system, after similar images of patients sleeping on the waiting room floor emerged.

‘We’ll have to look at Blacktown in particular—there’s major stress on our public hospitals,’ Minns said at the time. ‘We want to do better when it comes to health outcomes.’

The hospital’s challenges are compounded by rapid population growth in Sydney’s west, a shortage of beds, and ongoing staff shortages.

The recent resignation of Western Sydney Local Health District chief executive Graeme Loy, just hours before a scheduled vote of confidence by doctors at nearby Westmead, has only added to the sense of instability.

It pisses me off that Albanese see's fit to bring in foreigners, send money overseas and yet where this country needs the dollars and cents is being ignored. The man is an absolute fool and has no insight into the reality of the people of Australia. He is so weak minded and being brainwashed by so called world authorities on how to take of his peoples needs. Bloody disgraceful that those who have paid their taxes are being treated less than an animal
I reckon he's doing to the country what some marine steward did to his mother?

When will the governments learn that we cannot keep bringing people into this country until they can bring housing, hospitals, roads and schools up to scratch for the people already here ! This is disgusting ! Governments past and present have done nothing regarding forethought !
QLD has shortages in everything and what’s happening ? Money is being thrown at things to make the world think we are still the lucky country when OS visitors come for the Olympics ! What a bloody joke! Let’s hope none have to go to a hospital or see the poor homeless. I don’t care if hosting the Olympics brings money in what about the poor people suffering now ? All politicians need to wake up and stop giving themselves huge wage rises until they sort this country out.
Hi June. That's no good you think Qld has shortages. Not sure whereabouts you live, but Qld hospitals have a great reputation. I know this, because northern NSW residents are still driving over the border to go to Qld hospitals.

Casey emergency . hospital Victoria. Despite having private insurance I had to wait 10 hours to be referred to hospital of my choice . I wa 75 , after knee surgery my leg started swelling until it was enormous. I saw children throwing up go before me. An intoxicated man as well. Chairs were scarce so a man tried to sit on my knee. Saved by a young man who got rid of him and sat with me until I was seen and transferred where doctors were horrid at the swelling.
Surely we deserve better. Can’t blame staff they tried so hard to help but were too thin on the ground.

I can almost guarantee who you WON'T find sleeping on the floor at that hospital. Any of the migrants that have arrived and headed straight for Western Sydney to join the ghetto that is building in that part of Sydney. If they're not treated IMMEDIATELY, they carry on like a performing seal until they're seen to shut them up.

Albo created this problem, but he puts the onus back on the state government to fix his mess. Having worked in an emergency ward in a major Sydney teaching hospital, I've seen this more times than I can count. Infrastructure not keeping up with demand, and the poor silly workers at the coal face bearing the brunt of short sighted policies. This is a disgrace! Those poor men, who probably worked for 40 plus years, paying taxes, being treated like dirt.
Think I would have considered the seal act both as a diversion and entertainment, and made them wait their turn

Maybe if people didn't abuse the Emergency Department with shit like a cold or minor things the department would not be over worked, all that aside the poeple who work in these departments are amazing and deserve respect. And ALBO needs to go PRONTO he created the situation, but alas he is probably working on his next overseas trip paid for by US.
So agree. One guy that went before me had a hangover.

How many of the patients genuinely needed to go to Emergency? Here in SA Medicare has set up a few after hours health centres people can be treated at. There is a phone number you can call and be advised whether to go to one of those centres or Emergency in a Public Hospital.
In SA we have a few private hospitals with Emergency Depts. People can't be expected to use them when they charge $300.00+ which you can't claim from Medicare or Private Health Cover at all. The same applies to xrays, tests etc done at the private emergency

Sorry for you. Thankful Victoria is ok. And I can claim some back on insurance.

I love the south coast as well. Made the biggest mistake of my life by letting my son & DIL talk me into coming to Canberra to live close to them. Cut a long story short I ended up having a nervous breakdown & am now in a nursing home here. Have my name down for a transfer to the south coast & it cannot come soon enough. My son & DIL moved to France took her mother with them. I don’t keep in touch with them very often. Hope I dont have to wait too long for a transfer just love to be close to the sea.
Anglicare has a lovely, aged care village in Dapto. 😘

If everyone hates Albo then who voted him in .He has been given a very large majority so someone had to vote for him and his comrades. Just putting it out there
All the dole bludgers and everyone one else taking money for nothing and the young, they believed all the B/S they spruced in their adds, (they knew no better ) and Labor even said they told the biggest load of rubbish during their campaign to discredit Liberals. Would be interesting if they would win another election if held today. I sure as hell did not vote for them and never will. My Opinion.

Make me a dole bludger then, knocking on the door of the age of 66.

I was offered a high paying job in direct disability support services only six hours ago. I'm still umming and ahhing about it.

The problem is, they make so much noise that the staff can't concentrate and often can't hear.

Thanks for the information Clancieblue I will check that one out as well. 😘😘
Judy, in my 36+ yrs working in Aged Care, I found Anglicare to be the best. The nursing care per ratio of resident is now much the same across all facilities, the quality of care can differ greatly. (Anglicare was very good).
The standout difference for me is that Anglicare still employ their own staff for catering and laundry.
This makes a huge difference because many others hire contractors who are there to make a profit. So, the quality of food and laundry is much better when provided by their own staff.
