IKEA issues urgent recall for USB charger due to potential hazard

When it comes to electronics and gadgets, safety is paramount. This is particularly true for everyday items that we often take for granted, such as USB chargers.

IKEA, a household name for affordable furniture and home goods, has issued an urgent recall of one of its USB chargers due to a significant safety hazard.

The ASKSTORM 40W USB charger, specifically in the dark grey colour, has been identified as a potential safety hazard.

The charger's power cable may become damaged or broken, exposing users to live parts of the cable, which could lead to severe injuries or even death.

The recall includes products with the model number ICPSW5-40-1 and article number 304.611.94.

These chargers were available for sale both in-store and online across Australia from 1 April 2020 to 5 December 2023.

Product Safety Australia, the national body responsible for managing recalls and ensuring the safety of consumer products, has issued a stern warning about the potential risks associated with this product.

'There is a risk of burn injuries or death from electric shock if a user touches a damaged cable that is live with electricity,' the agency said in the recall notice.

'There is also a risk of damage to property if the charger catches fire.'

There have been incidents where the cables were damaged, leading to electric shock and burn injuries to consumers.

‘Safety is a top priority for IKEA, and therefore, ÅSKSTORM 40W USB charger dark grey is recalled,’ IKEA said in its recall statement.

‘The power cable may get damaged or broken after being wrapped around a charger or bent back and forth after a longer period of use,’ they reiterated.

‘The damaged cable may lead to thermal burns and electric shock.’

‘IKEA apologises for any inconvenience this recall for repair action may cause.’

If you or a loved one has purchased this charger, it is crucial to stop using the affected product immediately. IKEA is urging customers to contact them via phone or in-store to receive a full refund.

Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required to receive a full refund.

Contact your nearest IKEA branch in the following contact numbers below:
  • ACT/NSW – 02 8020 6641
  • Queensland – 07 3380 6800
  • Victoria/Tasmania – 03 8523 2154
  • South Australia – 08 8234 3333
  • Western Australia – 08 8234 3944

With this recall, it’s crucial to double-check and buy high-quality chargers. However, some opt for a more wallet-friendly alternative to an original charger.

Doing so risks getting a faulty ‘knock-off’, just like what happened to one mum’s non-Apple iPhone charger, which nearly started a fire.
