How does your favourite fruit mince pie rate? Experts weigh in

The Christmas season is just around the corner, and that means it's time to start stocking up on all your favourite festive treats!

One of the most iconic snacks has to be the fruit mince pie.

This delicious dessert is usually served with a dollop of cream or ice cream and is the perfect way to finish off a big Christmas dinner.

But with so many different brands and types of fruit mince pies on the market these days, it can be hard to know which ones are worth your money.

Luckily, consumer advocacy group CHOICE has done all the hard work for us by taste-testing some of Australia's most popular supermarket fruit mince pies!

They rounded up a few staffers and took them on a blind taste test of fruit mince pies from Coles, Woolies, and ALDI.

Coles Christmas Fruit Mince Pies

Coles Christmas Fruit Pies’ description says it’s a ‘rich rum-infused traditional fruit mince filling encased in shortcrust pastry’.

A pack of six pies sells for $4.50.

Website Review Clue rates these pies from Coles 5/5, and says these are ‘not as sweet as most of the other (store brands) and are delicious’.

ALDI Kringle and Co Fruit Mince Pies

This offering from ALDI is quite simple in its description.

Traditional Fruit Mince Pies are said to be ‘Traditional Fruit Mince Pies with a home-style lattice top’ on the packaging. ALDI’s website does say, however, that no artificial colours or flavours are used in the making of the pies!

For a pack of six, customers can bag these sweet treats for only $2.69.

Woolworths Shortcrust Fruit Mince Pies

Last but not least, Woolies’ Shortcrust Fruit Mince Pies are described as ‘Buttery shortcrust pastry packed with vine fruits, aromatic species & infused with rum and brandy.’

A pack of six retails for $4.50.

Many reviews on Woolworths’ website praised the pie for its delicious taste and ‘reasonable’ price.

‘They were delicious, not overly sweet or spiced or with too much peel.’ one reviewer said.

Some low ratings though came from users who said the pies had an ‘artificial’ flavour.

Now that the entries have been announced… CHOICE’s pick for the best-tasting supermarket fruit mince pie is…

ALDI’s (Kringle and Co) Fruit Mince Pies!

Forty-four per cent of CHOICE staffers who took part in the taste test voted in favour of ALDI’s fruit mince pie.

In second place is Woolies’ Shortcrust Fruit Mince Pies with 40 per cent of votes.

And sitting in third is Coles’ Christmas Fruit Mince Pies with only 16 per cent of votes.

Sadly, not much information was given as to why CHOICE staffers voted the way they did — but it’s clear that they will be taking note of ALDI’s holiday fruit mince pie offerings when they troop to the stores for the holidays!

Key Takeaways

  • The best supermarket fruit mince pie in Australia for this year's holiday season is from ALDI, costing $2.69 for a pack of six according to consumer advocacy group CHOICE.
  • ALDI's Kringle and Co Fruit Mince Pies was chosen by 44% of CHOICE staffers in a blind taste test.

I don't buy mice pies any more. They were the one thing we either forgot to serve or everyone was too stuffed full they didn't have space for them! :)

We don't have a big meal on Christmas Day, we prefer to graze throughout the day, so not having the room for a mince pie is not something that happens, we can eat them at any time while doing the Graze thing. I have also been buying them since they first appeared in the different Supermarkets as they are are loved by my husband so I tuck one into his lunch box most days

This year Woolworths didn't have the great 6 pack of fruit mince pies from an unknown brand which would have gotten the nod, instead they have the very crumbly Woolies own brand, they are awful. Next year bring back the no frills ones they are much better. I can see why Woolies came last, they break in half when you eat the first mouthful. I like to take them to work as a snack ,usually they start coming out in early November but staff told me they were no longer getting in the unknown brand.

I prefer Mr Kipling mince pies but they are barely to be found anymore! I do agree with Rosalie though. Homemade with Robertson’s mincemeat & buttery shortcrust is best of all!
