How clean is your dishcloth really? This Aussie mum's cleaning tip will reveal the shocking truth!

Cleaning has always been a fundamental part of our daily routines.

It might not be all that glamorous, but it is important to keep our cleanliness in check, especially thanks to how easily germs can travel from one surface to another.

That's why we found it helpful to hear about an Aussie mum's recent discovery on how to keep her dishcloths in top condition, with a deep cleaning tip that will give you pause for thought.

Boiling dishcloths may help to rid them of stench and bacteria! Image: Facebook

As she revealed in a social media group for cleaning tips, she had begun to notice that her dishcloths weren't quite as fresh as they once were: 'These dishcloths have been put through the wash, and we regularly rotate them, I still felt they were a bit stinky.'

It was then that a friend recommended boiling them with a few drops of dishwashing liquid as a degreaser, which she went ahead and tried out.

Although the result was pretty shocking for the woman, it definitely proved to be effective!

'This is the second round, and they might need a third and fourth,' she said, alongside an image of the used-up pot of boiling water, containing the cloths filled with dirt and grime.

To make the most of this trick, she advised that the water should be boiled over 60 degrees in a large pot, and that using vinegar as well as dishwashing liquid could be even better.

This cleaning system wasn't new to many of the members; quite a few revealed that they were 'old schoolers' and had been doing it this way for years.

One suggested an extra step too, speaking about how she completed the cycle of 'boil, rinse in the sink, boil, rinse and then into the wash'.

Reinforcing the idea of boiling, another member said an old-fashioned boiler would do a great job on materials such as cloths, and modern machines just aren't as good at getting rid of dirt and residual detergents.

The trick also apparently works on items other than dishcloths. Other commenters said they used it for towels, bed sheets, and even work uniforms to get rid of strong odours and germs.

Whilst boiling was the clear winner over other techniques suggested in the group–such as using the microwave or even the dishwasher–it was evident that this method was a pretty effective way of giving those pesky dishcloths their much-needed 'spring clean'.

Probably not for everyone but I soak mine in bleach and dishwashing liquid. I have read in the past that you can put them in the dishwasher as stated but I haven’t tried that - maybe I will now

I have NEVER used a dishcloth. Rates up there with toilet brushes as the most obnoxious household implement of all time. I wash up like a dishwasher. Initial rinse, proper wash then final rinse. Every thing is dried in a draining rack.

I boil on the stove with cloudy ammonia added to the water.

I also soak mine in bleach and dishwashing liquid. I use a clean one every day and soak overnight, then throw In washing machine and hang out in the sun to dry. Stay nice and clean and fresh for a lot of uses.
